What do you think about the price?
Hi,
Im looking to buy a bettle and have managed to find one locally, but I think they are wanting a little to much for it. So I thought I would ask you
kind people and see what you think. Unfortunately I dont have a picture to share.
Its a 1972 bettle with one owner. Its done 26,000km on a reconditioned motor and had a new paint job done about 13 years ago, just updating the
original colour of gemini blue. The drivers seat has been recovered in original black, but all other seats are in excellent original condition.
There is a very small rip in the roof lining. It's from inland NSW and has no rust apart from a little surface rust on the bottom of the back
window. Its been serviced since new by the same local VW garage and has upto date log books. Yesterday it had a head installed as the owner didnt
want to sell it with anything wrong with it. Its been regularly driven.
The owners have loved it and looked after it since new and are selling as they are getting older and no longer need it. They told me they would cry
when someone bought it.
They are after $7K, which I think is a little high, but what do others think? I know its hard if you havent seen it, but any comments would help.
Cheers,
Lee |

With all due respect, its worth what anyone wants to pay for it really.
I'm no vw expert so i cant comment what it could be worth, yet it does sound a bit high from what ive seen in Adelaide.
Get someone that knows these cars to have a look for you

How did you find out about this car? If it was in a paper or ebay or something, another forum member who lives close by could go and check it out for
you??? Im sure someone would be willing, and there are alot of folks on here that have enough knowledge.

They might love the car to the value of $7000, but that doesnt mean its worth that much. You need someone else who knows the usual rust spots to check
it out. no rust in a 37 year old volkswagen is just unthinkable. A head should last more than 26,000km. Thats only a year or so's driving. What is
the other head like? Why isnt it in the same condition. Maybe it will be in a short period of time. There are gems to be found occasionally, but they
are rare. If you find a gem, be very wary

$7k for a "good" VW is not too high
'
It is a 72 so it is a not so "sought after" Super Beetle
Persnally i reckon that is better. I love the later curved screen beetles
If it has NO RUS then it is a rare care indeed
If it as good as it reads then it is worth $5k at least
Up to you if it is worth another $2k for being so close at the time you want it
May take another 3 years before the perfect beetle comes up
May take 2 weeks
Futue te ipsum!!!

Thanks for all the info.
I spoke with the VW mechanic today who has looked after the car for the last 20 or so years. He reckons it is worth its money and feels they could
get $8-9K in Sydney or Melb....Im not sure about that. He has looked the car over and there is only one small bit of rust below the back window. The
head went as a sparkplug came out....not being mechanically minded I have no idea what that means.
Its in the Albury area, so if there is anyone in the area who would be interested in taking a look at it for me, I would love to hear from you. |

if it is "in the back window" then it is easy to pull the window, fix the rust, do a paint brust touch up and no one will be the wiser
If it is in the rear pillars then that is a different matter
Most supers rust in the rear pillars and that is an on going fix up
Futue te ipsum!!!

I am assuming the spark plug has come out with head material attached and therefor I expect the heads to be reconditioned second hand heads. My
experience has been that the life of an engine with second hand heads is not as good as I would like. Unfortunately what seems to run very nicely to
begin with can end up needing a whole new motor in a years time. If you know of the mechanics reputation that would assist in knowing how good this
all is. For $7K I would want it to be something pretty special in a 72.
BTW I loved owning my 72 and my 70 and my 66 and my 54 ... so enjoy regardless. If you really like it then go for it
