who cut up their oval
hi, anyone cut up the rear of their oval to fit a bigger motor, without wrecking it and making it easy to put back to standard. .....grogy

I don't know what you mean there's pleanty of room my engine's been out a couple of times no worries. Just have to take the twin carbs off before.
It's just a barstard to change the spark plugs with the twin carbs.
Just keep it as it is how often would you be taking the engine in and out anyway.
Your 1600 should be just as easy to get out it's a bit of a tight fit but it's not something that you do every day.

They're not touching grogy, that's where he has cut away to get clearance. If you cut away any more than the bare minimum you will weaken the bumper
support bracket.
By the way the pic is vw54's car.

Matt.

the engine drops out under the car you don't have to take the tappet covers off to get the engine out.

maybe they all bit diff, with mine the tappet covers are hard against the inside of car the bottom studs are still slightly inside the trans, the
spigot shaft is just clearing the thrust. i have to wriggle motor back, drop the jack abit and keep doin it as its hard agains the valance all the way
out as i lower the jack, also putting pressure on the bottom engine studs as they havent cleared the trans. very tight fit, and thats just with a
standard 1600.

I normally have to have my distributor out and fan belt off too. It just gives me a tad more room to clear the bottom case studs and spigot shaft, of
course to go back that little bit you have to be on enough of an angle to be clear at the rockers.
I'm sure over time the threads of the case studs will clearance the holes in the gearbox as they always come out covered in filings. When it gets to
that point I might start using nylock nuts at the bottom.
It's an adventure every time my engine comes out. Sometimes I struggle with it for ages, other times it practically falls out. Same when going back
in.
I don't have any clearance cuts and it's a 1300 twinport (same dimensions as 1600) in a '61 beetle.
Regards,
Matt.

thats agood idea, but i think i have to cut away... as the rods n stroke will add about 20mm to the width . but i suppose its already on later pan,
so more mods wont make a lot of diff.

Don't do that to the oval, do it to your 356 Porsche instead.
This is my Volkswagen, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Without me my Volkswagen is useless, without my Volkswagen, I am useless.

I have chopped my 54 up a bit.
I asked myself the same question but my answer always came back to, why would I ever change it back. it's not like they are ever going to be worth a
massive amount of money.

Heath, that air intake position worries me, i have a oberg filter mounted there and the amount of tar and small rocks and other crap built up on top
of it every couple of months is my concern for you (yeah i have seen the other pics with your filter)
