car scrappage scheme

I was at a mates house playing cars tonight, and a friend of mine was complaining about how crap her old toyota rolla seca is (every young person I know complains to me because I used to be an apprentice :( ) and that its got little life in it. Them she brings up, that she "apparently" heard that the Gov might be bringing in a scrapping scheme. Has anyone heard about this?? Or is it something that just floats the grape vine occasionally. She said that the scheme basically entailed "if your car is over 10 years old, they will give you $3000 to scrap it". I must say I found this really quite sad, and I hope no young idiots throw in their VW or other classic (like an rx7 or datsun) just cause it would be cool to have a CD player and air con in their new HyunGAY Getz. This would be a shame. The link below is all I could find on the topic.

http://www.goauto.com.au/mellor/mellor.nsf/story2/AD96AF19A1BC9A2ACA257575001A2864

:( not good for the classics.

Hi

I didn't see the story but I heard it on a radio promo.

I think I heard that the greens were opposed to it, I guess because if we all got new cars all of sudden there would be lots of pollution involved in making them.

If this scheme goes ahead where will all the old classic cars come from in the future? I remember when old Datsun 1200 & 1600s and old Corollas etc weren't cool at all, now there is demand for them.

Ok for a rusted out old toyota-nissan-fiat-hyundai

This was done years ago in the UK...

I was told that many people cashed in their Beetles and Kombis etc.... plus other old rare cars that have all now disappeared...

It will definately make its mark on classic cars...

its not a good idea.... I don;t like it...

Pollution would probably drop... as newer cars have less pollution...

Steve

the early P510 [datsun 1600] imported from Japan had an independant rear suspension... Locally made 1600 didn't have this suspension...

This is a fairly common scheme overseas - the USA has had an 'old bomb' scrapping plan for a number of years, and in Germany sales of new cars increased by 10% when a similar scheme was started. VWs built since the mid-1980s are designed to be recyclable, and VW has built several dedicated dismantling/recycling centres in Germany.

This is a news report from the ABC about the scheme being introduced here:

Scrap metal dealers pay more $$ for VW's than just about any other car. My uncle had a huge clean out a while ago and didn't have to pay to get a heap of old Splits, bays and a few beetles and type 3 taken away. Before everyone carrys on about scrapping cars these were either rusted beyond recognition or were used as donor cars for rust repairs and had sections removed. anything that was salvagable was kept. The guy who came to pick up the remnants of the cars said " I get heaps for these things so i'll take the lot for nothing".

Ruddy you should give people with old cars $3,000 as long as they update them that's a better way to go.

So it says if it has a resale value of under $3k, it would be considered under the proposal. I just see this as a way for us to push up our prices to above $3k. Easily solved.

This has never been implemented in the UK, some other Euro countries do this such as Spain and Portugal but there are still plenty of shitty old cars on the road in the UK and a huge classic car scene.

What these beuracrats don't understand about old cars is that most of us are installing either modern engines into them or fuel injection kits and getting better performance and mileage than new cars, plus how much plastic is in new cars anyway, thats what is really using up most of the oil. Aint no way i am cashing in my cars, i got me bug, a 71 DC, need an oval and a split then i will be happy to tell the cashers to F$%* off.

This is my Volkswagen, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Without me my Volkswagen is useless, without my Volkswagen, I am useless.

exactly, if the scrappage value is $5K. We have all become a little wealthier.

But I think it would be really stupid for our Gov to do this, because nearly ALL new cars are.... imported.

Chances are if you drive a car worth less that $3000 then you either really like it or you cant afford to update.

Either way i doubt anyone will be scrapping the daily to go into debt for a new car in the current economic climate.

I wonder how much extra carbon emmissions will be created from the scrap guys clapped out diesel truck working over time picking up all these cars and the crusher using more electricity.

I dont think it will happen here. Aussies love classic cars too much. You just need to visit sydney on Australia day to see that. Who would have thought there would be a toyota corona club? But there is.

It would destroy the cheap end of the car market. You wouldnt buy anything under $3K. You'd only be able to by rubbish for $3-4. I think that would push up the reasonable cars to 6K. etc etc. The second hand $4k hyundai-ish market is huge. You can buy low milage reliable yet roughly treated hyundais, mitsubishis, daewoos etc for $4k everywhere and unis are full of them.

It's an MTA plan, not government.

Your not getting 3 grand, your getting a voucher for 3 grand off a new car.

The only ones to come out on top will be motor traders association members.

If You have a car worth $3000 and trade it in for a new car..
Do You get $3000 for the car PLUS another $3000 from the MTA ??

I assume the car needs to be registered too...

I cant see anyone taking this offer up. The reason people are driving crappy old cars is that they cant afford new ones. Even if they got a voucher for $3000 where are they going to find the rest of the money?
