Small watercooled VW advice...

I will soon be on the lookout for a small watercooled car for my wife. Currently she drives a 92 EB S Pac Falcon and it a little tired of it's size and fuel consumption.

I have been thinking about an early Golf considering I am heading down the VW road and wanted to know what these things go for these days and is there anything in particular that I should look out for.

Rach's only requirement is that it goes, stops, has aircon, a stereo and is reliable.

Any advice welcomed

Cheers
Bruce
