L bug screen
I'm at the stage of putting my windscreen back in my L bug, wondering if anyone who has experience could tell whether it is better to start at the
top or at the bottom. The rear screen was fairly straightforward but I expect the front to be a bit more difficult. Also is it easier with detergent
or not?

Hi
I just put 2 in. The 1st one I cracked after it was in, I think bay window Kombis and L bugs have the hardest screens to fit.
I'm not sure if its easier top or bottom but I had lots lanolin spray on mine and it really helped.

yea they are a real pain in the ass cos the rubber trys to slip off the corners ar you feed it on
i normally start in one of the lower corners and have the cable going all the way around atleast 2.5 times
its impossible to do without a 2nd person putting pressure on the outside
its messy but i fill a squirt bottle with water and bit of baby shampoo

Thanks Steve, Joel, yeah sounds what I expected, my son and I will try tomorrow. This screen is actually one I bought as I cracked the original
getting it out, it was a laminated one but this new one is toughened but not laminated. Steady steady see how we go!

Hi
I use window sash cord as the rope to pull it in, a trick I leaned from Leigh Harris is to get a nozzle from a silicone tube and have the cord passing
through it, you can then lay the cord into he hole as if your laying a bead of silcone.
If I'm not going to reuse my rubbers, and they would only be new in this case, I cut the old window rubbers.
Also don't use any sealant on the rubber.

Hey guys, i just recently got a pro come over and put my kombi screen in for me. I needed a new laminated one and it cost $220 including fitting.
The fellow did the job in 10 minutes and all by himself ! I stood back and watched with awe as he just popped it in - he did have approx 25 years
experience,
so i guess that helped too.
I paid attention and here area few pointers;
Since it was a new rubber, he did NOT use any lube
He used a thick cord, very similiar to standard rope.
He inserted the cord so he had a loop on the top and bottom of the screen.
lined up the screen and pulled both bottom and top cords at the same time.
He used a special 'suction' cup tool and as he worked the rope around, he shifted the cup
around, locking it against the glass and pulling the screen in. He never had to exit the vehicle
during the whole process.
He made it look so simple.
The flatter glass on beetles and kombis are easy, but the L-Bug and bay window screens require a bit more
skill and courage.
I guess if you were doing this job urself and didn't have the suction cup tool, a friend assisting on the outside, gently
pushing the glass in (as you work the rope around) will more or less be the same thing.
and if that fails, like with me, $220 wasn't all that expensive to watch a pro do it !

L bug screen
Respect that guys skill to do that by youself. We got our screen in today but I had my wife, daughter and son to help! But it's in! huge plus, now
for the dash, electrics, seats, carpets etc,etc

i havent had to do one for a couple of years luckily
but many hands make light work of it
coming home from valla'06 just coming into grafton a semi launched a boulder at me and smashed mine
new one was $165 from novus or windscreens obrien

Just wondering how toughened screens and laminated screens break: does the toughened ones shatter an laminated split but stay together? are the older
types still legal? I would not look forward to doing it twice!

I had a new screen installed about a year ago, and the windscreen bloke said that it was illegal for them to supply a toughened windscreen. I think if
you already have one, you can still use it though.
