Overheating '72


I couldnt find anything related to this anywhere so i hope it hasnt already been answered.
I have a '72 superbug (1600) stock engine (First car)
I have an engine temp gauge and the motor runs fine for half an hour but on any trip above this it starts tipping over half way.
I have no piping running from the doghouse and iv heard this can be bad.
Im also getting pinging (i think thats what it is)
How can i solve both these problems?

hey mate a pining sound could be a busted ring or something but the reason for the pinging may be because of the reason why you have an overheating problem so it could be your generator/alternator may not be turning the fan posibly because the fan belt slips or there isnt any belt driving the fan hope this help but also where are you located

pinging is usually timing which can make it heat up ,as Dave says ,take it to a vw specialist for a tune up and service:tu:

is there a temp scale on your gauge?
bare in mind most of those gauges are made for water cooled cars that run lower oil temps than our air cooled motors

if so what temp is it running cos over half is normal for a vw anything upto 105C/220F is normal

theres alot of varibles like where the guage sender is mounted, whether the previous owners have done the classic throw out the tinware trick or removed the heater hoses but left heaterboxes in place it all can all have that effect

plus other things like decklid with wrong vents, clogged up fan/shroud etc

and yes pinging is the engine trying to destroy itself
u need to get the timing checked ASAP

timing is too advanced --- Use Premium fuel - have the timing checked

replace the doghouse tinware...--
engine IS Overheating from Hot air from the oil cooler...

ALSO: Hot Air must stay under the tinware/engine compartment - Sucking in preheated air isn't good...

definitely needs the hoses for the heater or the holes blocking up as it would be blowing the cooling air all through the engine bay ,and if blocking fan housing holes you need to block tinware holes as well:)

does your engine still have the heater boxes underneath?

if it does you need to reinstall those missing heater hoses not block off the outlets

but if the heaterboxes have been removed and J pipes fitted then just get some plugs and block off the outlets on the shroud and cover over the holes in the breast plate

Hi Miles

the PLUGS - these Holes have to be plugged up with 2 inch cup type welch plugs...
most VW shops would have them...

The HOLES in the tinware have to be covered up also..
65mm plates - one on top one below with a screw thru the centre..

a LOT of HOT air from the exhaust is coming thru those holes...

Pinging destroys VW engines fast...
they need to be in tune all the time...

There may be someone on here that can help You...
