"Bolt Ons"

Hi guys, just lookign for some quick advice.
looking for abit more power and trying to eliminate the signature bug engine note from my standard 1972 1600 bug
What are some quick, reasonably easy mods to achieve this somewhat?
Im looking at upgrading ignition system, new exhaust and hopefully new carbs
Speaking of which, because this is my first vw can someone let me know if im running single or dual port?
A pic is below, hope that helps

First of all you have a dual port
See the rubber bits that connect to the cast aluminium end castings on your manifold?
You will see they splay out to 2 ports as opposed to a single port that has......... well ....... one port

As for bolt ons - read here

http://www.aircooled.net/gnrlsite/resource/articles/mods.htm

A VW doesnt need much to make it go good
Handling will beat power most times

make sure your motor is well tuned and concentrate on handling
A set of lowered struts with heavier springs
a set of type 3 rear torsion bars and new gromments
KYB gas shocks on the back and say some Boge inserts on the front
decent rubber on widened rims
new bushing and coupling and a short shift kit for the gear stick
Adjust steering box or replace if you have to

Also related to the tinware all being there, best to connect the hoses from the fan shroud to the heater boxes down underneath... or at minimum plug them up to keep the airflow under control.

thabnks for the quick replies
First off, since the photo i have connected the hoses
Im not looking for a heap of power, just something to keep up with normal traffic abit more and hopefully a nice exhaust note at least
What exactly does "tinware" include?. between where the hoses connect i have another circular hole which i can see the floor underneath

Also what does the short shift kit comprise?
My gear changes at the moment dont take a whole lot of effort and there was a gene berg shifter in place when i bought, is there a chance i might already have one? is there a simple way to check?
Thanks

well all the engine bay tin is in place by the looks

quiet pack mufflers dont sound anything like a stock exhaust and give alot better flow
nice deep crisp note without being loud
my thunderbird quiet pack is actully quieter than a stock pea shooter muffler

as dave said electronic ignition, gets rid of those dinosaur points

twin carbs offer a nice improvement even on a stock engine

short shifts just reduce the gear change throw by lifting the gear stick up which changes the pivot point

havent clapped eyes on a berg shifter for years but pretty sure they are quickshift by nature.... as in its part of the assembly

u could get ratio rockers which increase the lifts of the valves
now standard lifts is about .250" at the cam at the valve is .275" (1.1:1standard rockers)
with the 1.4 rockers lift @ valve is increased to .350". don't bother with the 1.25 ratio
however with most ratio rockers you'd require shorter pushrods and stronger unless u can get them from some dude as a kit.

also while carbon silicon insulated spark leads are friendly to your radio and such copper leads deliver slightly hotter spark compared to carbon leads (carbon leads usually have around 5k Ohm resistance depend on the length) you already have 5k Ohm in the rotor anyway.

alternative from electronic ignition u could probably get high energy ignition or CDI from jaycar
i saw a CDI kit for about $20 this CDI will work on vw engine but you'd need to do a bit of rewiring
well not really an alternative since you can have cdi triggered from electronic ignition

ratio rockers are wasted unless you really improve on the breathing

theres so many varibles with each engine like deckheight etc so shortened pushrods have to be tailoured for each indiviual engine so its not really possible to just sell kits

Berg shifters are available in 40% and 60% reduction in throw/travel. Do you want to sell it?

Hahaha. i know how special that chrome thing in my hand is :p
Now im even less willing to part with it now that i know its short shift
I have heard the same with the rocker. 1.25s relly arent worth it and 1.4 need different sized rods
At the moment im thinking electronic ignition in conjunction with new 009, a new exhaust (iv seen the "gt" i think it was, on cvd for about $300) and hopefully a twin carb set up, but i really dont know where the prices start for those, as iv mentioned in another thread i can get my hands on some 45mm dellortos but they are way to big.
I dont want a big increase, but id like a nice sound and abit more pull

those GT mufflers are your base product and dont really offer any worthwhile gains
for $300 it better be the stainless version

best all rounder for stock to mild engine has always been the quiet pack, been that way for decades

nice flow and sound good without being loud
ground clearance is the only problem with them if on a lowered car

just steer clear of any with the Empi label on

build quality is atrocious, fit is even worse and they start falling apart pretty quick, but thats to be expected with the price they sell for

I would wait with the oo9 until the carbs come along, as they can be a pita with stock carb, but definately a good 4-1 extractor system, ie. not a GT or Monza, the hide-away my choice is it is less visual/ugly, it puts the muff up under the guard, altho needs to be removed for routine valve adjust. Go see Westi (westside mufflers), he'll sot you out, s/s and all.:tu:

Hmmm...looks like a converted semi-auto motor. Does the carby say H30/31 on the float bowl (side facing left as you look at your piccie)?
If it's a 34 Pict 3....I'd call it a converted donk because of the carb and vacuum spigot on the centre section of the manifold.

Could just be a semi-auto manifold ctefeh. My manifold has the vacuum port as well. (Also has same ignition leads and chrome airfilter. Had to look twice to make sure it wasn't a picture of my engine )

i run the single quietpack but the thunderbird version not empi

main thing is they hang down pretty low
