EMPI Filter pump
Just browsing the Classic VW website and found this:
EMPI-FILTER-PUMP
from EMPI These high capacity pumps provide added oil pressure, increased oil volume and oil cooling. The filter cleans the oil 100% of the time. Kit
includes filter and all necessary hardware. (Will not fit with stock muffler).
Year : 1968 to 1979
In theory this sounds like a good addition to the beetle engine, has anyone used them are they worthwhile?

ive heard a few people using them complain of slight pressure loss which is understandable given the tight path it forces the oil to take
also very close proximity to the exhaust i dont like either
as long as you change your oil every 3000miles or twice a year on a stock to mild motor i wouldnt bother
if your were that concerned get it full flowed properly

ah sorry
instead of running a filter hangin off the oil pump the proper method of full flowing is fitting a new oil pump cover which diverts the oil out of the
pump to a remotely mounted filter somewhere ( mines under the left gaurd)
then a return hose goes to a fittting into the main gallery
heres a pic from when i built my 1776, u can see the brass outlet fitting on the pump and return into the case above
abit overkill for a stock motor and something thats done while the engines apart
as i said regular oil changes worked for the last 35+years with no filter

The other alternative is to fit a new pump with both in and out ports on the cover as below:

Thanks for all the help joel, Understand now. Is there a good reference for these style of modifications around the place? I have the Compleat idiots
guide...any other publications worth while for a somewhat noob dubber?
