Obtaining further vehicle information from chasis number

I am just starting the journey of restoring my Karmann Ghia, and am trying to get further information about my vehicle. I have established that it is actually a 1964 model built in 1963 (not a 1962 model as I had thought). I believe it was Australian delivered and that it is in its original colour (sea blue/blue-white 2 tone paint, and 559 trim). Is there a site where I can check where the car was sold and what it's original paint and trim were. Cheers, kg1962.

Hiya kg,

No site that I know of.

However, you can get the basic production data for your particular car from the Stiftung AutoMuseum in Wolfsburg, Germany. You'll need to give them your VIN. It is not a free service (although it used to be) and for current charges you'll need to contact the Museum. They will accept credit cards as well as money orders. Usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to get the information in hand.

Information included will be date of production, engine serial number, color, and port of destination. I think there is other information included as well, just can't recall right now.

Thanks Bookwus,
I looked it up and the Volkswagen AutoMuseum does provide the information. I have sent an email and requested my car's "birth certificate". It costs 35 Euro! When I receive the certificate I will post the details of what sort of information they provide.

hope they give you more than they gave me for my oval. A whole heap of unknowns and an exported to fiji. which is pretty common apparently. Who would have though so many fijian cars would end up back here. Has to be something wrong with the database there. You will probably have better luck on a german produced car though.
