Oil Temperature
What's should to oil temperature sit on in a Baja with a standard engine? I just finished installing an oil temp gauge and I am keen to know whether
it's running hot, cold or just right.

A baja will be different to a stock bug due to body work removal
but besides all that it shouldnt go over 80 - 90 deg C

My Pobjoy engine in the SC was max at 125 C. Usually runs 90 to 115 depending on outside temperature. The Baja I would suspect would run cooler.

I drive 40 minutes to work everyday, 30 minutes on the highway and 10 minutes chugging around the city between the lights. I am yet to see it go over
80°C.
Normally sits around 75°C.

wheres your sender cos that will affect the reading
sump plate is virtually useless
ive got mine in the type3 block off area and happy temp seems to be 88c but if i push it on a hot day itll hit 100

It's drilled and tapped into the back of the sump on the rear just right and down from the main pulley.

A had a baja years ago and the temp was generally just shy of 100, measured on an un calibrated VDO gauge from a dipstick sensor. Would rise a little
more if engine was pushed hard (dual carb 1835).
Have always liked the check John Muir recomended in the Idiot Guide to vws: check temp of dipstick, if it is too hot to handle then your oil/engine is
hot.

I am putting a temp sensor in the type 3 block off plate too..
I've got one in the sump at the moment but have never hooked it up... lol

it probably wouldnt have worked any different being hooked up in the sump plate anyway
with mine in the sump plate the normal running temp was 60C
without changing anything except tapping it into the type3 block off its now 88C
confirmed with a dipstick thermometer
is this the spot smiley?

the plates were on ALL 1500 engines...
these were also used in type 3s..
seeing 1600 engines were also used in type 3s
I would have thought they would have been in all 1600
engines..
but from what i've read... it was only in ALL 1500 engines
anyway, it looks like that IS the place to have the temp sensor...

Newt, there's more than enough meat there to tap the sender into
its thick enough to support the studs for a type3 oil filler tube so one sender is no worries, plenty of ppl have tapped that area before
Lee, the only factory blocks in aus that came with the type 3 filler port were those fitted to type3s
i dont know what you been reading but no bug blocks including 1500s had them
yours probably has a replacement block if it has it
my best mate has had 2 1500 semi auto bugs and neither had them and both were low mileage nanna bugs with original engines
mine only does cos its a new universal block with type2/3 hanger mounting points

Hi
Mine is the original engine...
car was one owner - husband was VW mechanic in WA.
and i did read about the plates being on ALL 1500 engine blocks regardless of what they were fitted to..
I think it was a pommy book...
I find mistakes in most books so maybe the plates were fitted to all engines in early 1968.. ???? for one month??
or at random...???
I have too many books so I would probaly never find it again...
maybe the same book that said some Porsches had the same rear suspension pivot as the IRS beetles..
and also used the same part number....??
it may have been 924s?? but I doubt thay would use a VW part number.... lol

Early Non-turbo 944's definitely have VW trailing arms... I have a set down in the shed that I removed from a pranged 944 (cos I wanted the braking
