Auto Gearbox to manual

Maybe someone can help. I have a mate who's 2ltr 74 kombi auto gearbox is dead. He has been quoted $800 to fix. I have a 2ltr Manual gearbox at home. Can this be easily changed over?. I understand that you need to put a shift rod and new shifter in. What else is required?

Have a look here
http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=7331
Not quite what you want, but some useful info.
Alternatively some one on the list may have a cheap GB for you.
I have an auto out of a '74, was told it is working, but have not driven it myself to know. :thumb

I have a good 2ltr auto gearbox 4 sale if you need it, $200.00
Might be easier to do that change over to a manual set up.

I changed a 74 auto to manual before, but it is slightly different for a 2L.
Starting from the front of the car, remove the T bar shifter from the floor, underneath the manuals have a gear selector bush but you need to bend the tabs together and weld them so you can fit the bush.
Next you need to get some suitable tube to run through for the clutch tube, the gear selector rod is different so you need to get this to suit (its in two pieces) plus the coupling. You need to get a new accelerator cable as yours goes to the transmission then has a rod that goes to the carbs. You need to get a 2L flywheel & clutch &pressure plate, and a 2L starter motor. oh the front gearbox mount is different too..........new axles as well as the auto has different length axles (both lengths different to the manuals)......the auto has a starter inhibitor so that needs to be wired together.................plus the many hours labour to do the swap..........come to think of it, why did i ever bother?????.........:cussing..........
Spend the money getting the auto repaired, you'll be much better off..........

Or I can swap you some manual parts in return for the auto ones, such as shift couplings and drive shafts and stuff. No gearbox though.

Not worth the trouble and expense of converting over. Auto boxes are great - I wouldn't go back to a manual now. I paid about that much to have my Kombi's auto box rebuilt. Now it shifts beautifully and at exactly the right spot. Better than a Falcon or Commodore auto.

Did the quote include pulling out and refitting the engine and gearbox? If so, he can save some $$ by doing that himself. You can have the engine and gearbox out in a couple of hours.
