Another Newbie
My name is Taryn, im 32 !
I have always wanted a beetle since i was 12 and my parents bought one, although they only owned it for 3 months, i have always wanted one.
Having kids and life and family etc all got away from me, well today my husband went out and bought me a 64 VW.
So excited, now we have to work out where to start on this project !

Actually have no idea what to do or where to start yet, i didnt realise i was getting one until about 30 minutes prior to going to 'look' at it.
Lots of reading and researching to do for me, however we do have access to the colour changing pigments and heat reactive pigments, as we use these in
the flooring we do.
Anyone want to trade some epoxy flooring for some help with my car, lol.....
Im sure we will get there, we have allowed 4 yrs as a project to get her ready for her 50th birthday !
Anyone want to throw ideas at me im more than happy to take it all in.

........... is thinking .............. dark metallic purple, with stars down one side, not like drawn stars but more like airbrushed stars that look
like the real deal. Purple velvet interior (roof) and black leather seats ??
Or the same but in Metallic Dark Blue.
However i do really like the red/black combinations i have seen also.

Welcome. The car looks very good and clean to me. You are probably better to just work on mechanical, electrical and body problems (if any) Worry
about cosmetics far later as you may regret changing that colour. as someone else said just drive it. Money you save on cosmetics may be needed for
essentials anyway down the track.

Yeah, hubby wants to eventually change the motor, but i would like to keep it and clean it up as is, as it runs really well.
I think everyone is right though might driver her around for 6 - 12 months and work out what to do.
Hubby also suggested just redoing the paint colour that is on her now, things i know i need NOW are, seatbelts all of them need replacing, and need to
work out whats going on with the bonnet and boot as they dont click in shut. I have only ever put oil and water in my past vehicles, but i am
determined to work on this one, would love to get to know her inside and out.
So for starters, where would i start looking for new VW seatbelts. I would like to keep the VW logo but it needs new belts. (the front drivers one
has been replaced with a plain black one) but i would like them all to match. The passenger one would snap with any pressure it is that old, same
with the back ones.

they make em to the size you need and are australian ADR approved and much cheaper than buying from the shops

You generally have to press them in first to make them shut. Neither of mine work if I dont do this. Just wondering if you are maybe just trying to
close them without pushing in button 1st. If this is wrong then let us know as may be able to provide you both handle assemblies for postage only if
there required.

kombivw - Have pushed in the button and wriggles them around, previous owner said they havent worked in ages.
Not sure if i just need handles or whether i need the whole thing (excuse my lack of knowledge) but the but the handle goes into.

The bug number plate is real.
One of the reasons we bought the car, we were thinking of selling the plates to get the funds to start the car, but i think hubby has deceided that we
will be keeping them.

Sorry for delay in reply. I never subscribed to this thread and lost it. I did send a pm but not sure if you got it. I have both front and back
handle assemblies, tho dont know if there is a difference with different year models so post some pics of back of both of yours and I will check mine
are the same. Looking at the rear of he rear one lol (if that makes sense) There dont seem a lot that can go wrong unless spring is broke. Have you
tried maybe some WD40 on yours?

Hi All,
As with the names, I am Mrs I's other half.
I have a couple of pics for you with regards to the boot catch.
first is the assy' pulled apart, with the cover sitting underneath so the mechanism is visible. I found a lot of slop in this and it isn't from
wear. Just a simple way of working with no need for close tollerances. Works now too.
the 2nd (out of focus) is the latch of the boot after I braised the worn section and reshaped to near original. As 1 member already said, we too have
to push the bootlid down a bit to make it catch, but it holds firm now.

Catch on bonnet now temp fixed with a bit of panel adjustment and a couple of washers.
this bug has a bit of spray on filler here and there, but is geniunely a worthy project starter. |

As to seatblets, I have original VW Seat Belts out of my type 3 they seem to be in good nick if they fit your welcome to them for reasonable price
I have Driver, Passenger, and Rear, all Brown straps, no apparent
wearing, fibre tear, and all logos on the latches, as well as the center clasps for the driver and passenger seat, let me know if you want them and
also to others reading this if they will fit into Mrs VW cheers

Nice bug, I almost bought one just like it last year, same year and colour. I ended up getting a slightly younger one (1972) that didn’t need as
much work doing to it. Like you, I’ve loved Beetles for years and always wanted to get one, so last year after a few months looking around I
finally got one (I was 32!). So far my “Kermit” or “Kerbert” as my hubbie likes to call him!, has been very reliable. (perhaps I shouldn’t
tempt fate and say that!!) I've only had one small issue with my handbrake, which was easily fixed.
