Don't put old GTX2 into outdoor decking oil cans
Well, I thought I had used all the outdoor furniture oil on mY decking last year...
but I found a can that was nearly full...
so, out with the brush and started on the front verandah decking... the decking was looking great...
the shine was amazing... then I noticed a small pool of the decking oil.... but it had a small amount of dirt in it..
like in used engine oil....
then I smelt it....
Yep it was GTX2 used engine oil....
it wasn't too dirty as it had only done about a 1,000 kms..
so, one end is coated with GTX2 and now I'm doing the other end with the proper stuff...
I'm NOT sure what will happen when they meet up...
lol...
I asked the next door neighbour what I should do....
He replied " Just Don't tell the wife".... lol

haha gold!
maybe clean it off with deck wash as it has acid in it, it will pull it off the timber so you can put the real deck oil on..
yep dont tell the wife..

That reminds me of the new settler I know near Bega in NSW. The house is on the Prince's Highway, on the right, just before the village of Quaama,
going south.
He clad the outside of the house with flitches from the local sleeper cutters and then he painted the house with used diesel engine oil.
The house went black.
It became a local land mark.
That was back in the 1980s. It's probably still black.

It most probably was Me.. or My Wife...
no other silver beetles locally...
there are a few beetles around Muswellbrook that are driven daily.. but they are fairly rare in Scone...
I would like to have had a coffee with You...
but stopping someone driving by isn't too easy.....
cheers

Hey we used to put it on timber long ago to make it last. It may get a bit slippery when wet but you will live.
As long as the missus never finds out.
Address is in PM where you can money each week.....lol

Oils ain't Oils... but GTX2 is great for everything...
Well I've been putting it on My wooden fence for a long time... the gear oil was the worst...
smelt like gear oil for weeks..lol... YUK...
the ATF didn't smell too good either.....
the only piece of wood I didn't put oil on is behind one of my garden sheds...
a colorbond fence was screwed to it...
previous next door neighbor had taken the palings off and screwed the colorbond to the wooden cross member..
its about 3 metres long and now the colorbond fence is holding the wood up....lol
If Only I had oiled it..... lol
I was thinking of getting some "caution" tape and taping the oiled end of the decking off...

Don't know if that one was done on purpose, but 50 or 60 years ago and earlier it was quite common to paint timber (especially, rough cut
weatherboard) buildings with a mixture of creosote and sump oil. Can't get any blacker. It keeps the rain from rotting the timber but more
importantly, keeps white ants (termites) away. In those days most houses were built on wooden piers which gave easy access to those little wood
munching bastards....
It was a very, very, cheap way to paint a house, lasted a very long time and gave better protection than the commercial paints of the day too.
Although....... it would take many months before you could lean on anything without getting a black mark on your clothes.
My Nan used it on her house at Valla (starting when Valla only had a dozen or so houses) right up to the 1980's and it copped the salt air pretty
good too. Her house was the first in Valla to be built on concrete piers, but she wasn't taking any chances and always had it painted in creosote and
sump oil. I got stuck with a paint brush in my hand on many occasions as a kid.
Regards,
Matt.

funny you should mention it
when i was working at the garage years back i dropped the oil in customers gearbox and what came out was a loverly shade of yellow/offwhite/beige
how water go in a gearbox beats me but i reckon i could have bottled it and sold it as mcdonalds caramel thick shakes
or a trendy new decking oil colour
