That's sad news, hopefully some part of the company can be salvaged rather than disappearing completely.

Volkswagen hasn't used Karmann for a number of years now, except for the Audi 80 cabrio, and the parts for the New Beetle Cabrio top. The VW Eos is
built in house in VW's state of the art plant in Portugal, along with the Scirocco. Likewise VW's campers are made in-house nowadays, at the Hanover
plant.
Yes very sad. But then Ghia was bought by Ford years ago, and Westfalia is owned now by Mercedes Benz. Even Steyr-Damiler-Puch, makers of the VW
Syncro system, were broken up and restructured in the 1990s.
Recessions have a way of clearing out the unviable car makers.
