For the money a great buy, Kenwood have always made very good subs, amps and head units, stear clear of there speakers tho as there are much better brands for the same or less money.

Ur head unit is the most important thing as u can have the best speakers, amps, subs etc but if the headunits not up to scratch it will all sound shite.

Depending on what sort of money u plan to spend use component speakers not combined( no three way 6x9 shit) as the sound difference will amaze u. U dont have to go mental in a bug as the sounds bounce off well , a set of 6'5 mids/tweeters for the rear and as small as 4 inch mid/tweeters for the fronts with that sub and a good headunit will rock ur socks!

steff.............

Thanks for the advice :)

Head unit at the moment is a Sony CD player, will take a look at the model no, although not too important as i can see me using the Ipod through it more than anything (it has ipod mini-jack on the front and a set of outs on the back)
For the speakers, are Clarion any good? Autobarn also have a set of component 6.5's with tweeters for either $130 or $199 (not sure of difference, will investigate!) Then i just need to score an amp for them...might look at used on Ebay for that.

could be worse with some "accidental" reflecto-porn happenign..... like a certain ebay kettle

kenwood subs and amps arent bad value for money if you just looking for quality gear but not looking to win any sound offs

if you can go splits in the front do it
even the most basic splits crap all over the best coax speakers

I was thinking of these..

In Autobarn at $199 a set

http://www.audiotech.net.au/content/images/products/car/speakers/6x8/claSRP1620M.jpg

Was going to run a set in the front and create something like this

And also another set in the rear shelf above the sub.

Then get an amp to run both sets..

nuffin wrong with clazza speakers, as long as u pump the majority of the bass through the sub. They don't like too much of it at all at high volumes in the 3 sets i have installed ova the years. crisp and definitely clear.

I assume the sub box is sealed? what rms we lookin at?

If ur buying from Autobarn then "Pulk" are the only ones worth looking at. I used them for years in the Uk and they perform bloody great, they are used offen in SPL cars and come away with there fair share of wins. for value for money they isnt much than can touch them.

Sony headunits are not the greatest(not the worst either) It all depends on how keen ur ear is and how good u want it,. Many people use them and are more than happy with the performance. Head units are a more u spend the better they normaly are type of thing where as speakers can be just as good cheaper(if u know what to look for).

At the end of the day if ur happy then thats all that matters ....

steff,...

Thanks for that.
Not sure about the rms, but i do know that the box is sealed.
I'm sure it will be fine for filling a beetle anyway.

Also i will have a look at the Polk ones next time i'm in Autobarn.
I had a mate back in the UK who had a bass-tube made by Collins in his Beetle and that kicked arse so bad! I think it was only a 6" speaker in it but it was the maddest system i'd heard..you just sat in it and shook to bits! He just had that with 1 x Kenwood amp running 4 x 6" in the panels and it was more than enough.
I can't seem to find anything made by Collins here though. Possibly just a UK brand?
I'm deffo going to upgrade the head unit at some point, but as it's in there and gives a sound i may as well just make do for now until the rest is sorted.

Yey!

My lovely wife has just put the sub & amp combo on layby for my birthday!

Now....another slight dilema.

My head unit has one set of pre-outs....which are going to be used on the mono amp for the sub for the time being.
But in a month or 2 i'm looking at getting another amp to run the 2 x sets of front kick / rear shelf speakers....

My question is....

Am i ok to split the pre-out signal into 2 for the time being? I will get another head unit eventually...but it's way down on the list until i get the other stuff sorted.
Will splitting the signal be a huge deal? Or am i better off getting an amp like the Kenwood KAC-7204 which has a set of line outs as well as in's....so that way i can go from the head unit to the stereo amp...and then line out to the mono sub amp.

Will splitting the signal from the head unit sound awful, or is it do-able until i source a better head unit?

This is not a competition set-up i'm going for....just something loud and ok-ish sounding!

Thoughts appreciated!

splitting them is fine
the amp for the sub should have a built x-over

are you running a genny or an alt?

if your running a genny you may find at night with the headlights on its will struggle abit with the system cranked up abit
especially at idle
