Running Boards
Hi All,
Getting closer with my 65 now. The running boards I have are quite light weight, clearly not original, but they are OK.... The issue I have is
they don't fit the contour of the guards as they are too short at the outer edge...
I am not sure how to go about making weird shaped little wedges
My question is what is the best material to use to fill the the gap?
Cheers Ian

you should have a rubber washer type gap filler when installing them
It goes between the guard n board
also you can bend the guard to suit the shape of the board they never fitted perfect when new
also the quality of the running boards plays a big part it fit as well there are 3 difffering qualities available with 3 different prices as well
you get what u pay for

Hi Ian, the reason theres a big gap there is your bugs got the wrong running boards fitted
it was some time around 65 ish they changed the shape
the early ones had a sqaured off edge like the ones fitted on your bug and fitted into a recess in the front guard
then after that the gaurds were smooth and the running boards followed the shape of the guards

Running boards
Thanks guys ,
I can imagine the boards are right, just the poor fit type. but I believe they are basically correct for my car.
Have decided to cut the ends off and weld new pieces on that will conform to the shape of the guards.
On taking them apart I wonder if there is somewhere worse than China for parts 'coz I think these came from there.
Had fun trying to find rubber matting with wide spaces and round flutes... Ended up with narrow pointy ribs . Rare Spares had some good stuff
locally, after I spent half a day on the phone.
Cheers Ian
