My beef with Wolfsburg
A month ago i returned from my holiday in Europe. My main reason for going was to visit my family in Switzerland and stop in a few places of interest.
Since i was passing through Germany, i thought it would be a top idea to visit Wolfsburg, and in particular, the much treasured VW museum.
Many months of research and bookings of train travel led to a huge disappointment, when on the day, the museum was closed !
I had arrived at Wolfsburg, very excited, like a little kid going to his first candy store.
Not only did i end up going to the wrong place (pay attention for those of you who are contemplating going), but it took many questions to different
staff to finally find out where the REAL museum actually was.
For those of you who have seen pictures of the actual factory, yes that still exists, and right next door is a place called AUTOSTADT. A
museum-come-vw car dealership. Folks, this is NOT the actual VW museum which carries almost 130 different VWs. That one is located another 5 minutes
down the road ! Not clearly advertised in any way, sign-posted, nothing. Even the locals are unsure of its existence. Though AUTOSTADT is worth
visiting, it wasn't the place i wanted to be.
After consultation with a manager of Autostadt precinct , he finally produced a brochure "Stiftung Automuseum Volkswagen", with the opening times
now visibly scribbled out with nikko. He said that the museum decided to change the opening times due to the lack of visitors. So instead of being
open 7 days a week (like it said on the website before i left for the holiday), it now had changed to weekends only. Unfortunatley, due to the time
constraints and train bookings, i could only be there on a thursday. Somewhere between the time i departed for the holiday and arriving in Wolfsburg,
the museum made the executive decision to change the opening times. Now that is REALLY bad luck !
Now , anyone could imagine how far my heart sank to hear that. Does anyone remember the poor Griswalds going to Wally world ? Well, yes the thought
had crossed my mind to jump the fence and break in.......
So, having sadly returned to Australia without having 'rubbed' myself against some rare VWs.....i implore anyone going over there to make sure you
visit on weekends only.
Though i sometimes wonder, why couldn't they have just combined the museum with AUTOSTADT ? it is the most obvious place to have them, right next
door to the factory these cars were built at, not down the road in a shed....
There is no doubt, i will go back......

Had a similar experience on my honeymoon a couple of years back. Ended up in Autostadt instead of the proper vw museum as I was expecting.
Also had to wait about 3 hours to check in after the hotel muddled up the dates we were to be booked in. Wolfsburg was just an overnight stop over so
time wasn't on our side with these sort of mistakes (had a similar experience earlier in Munich with hotel bookings). Needless to say, it wasn't
the sort of German effeciency that I was expecting to be greeted with.
These sort of mistakes with the Autostadt and the real VW museum might explain why the latter is suffering an attendance issue.
If you can't fix it with a hammer,
you have an electrical problem....

It is a problem. We went to Wolfsburg last year for 3 days and toured the factory and museum and town as well. We caught a taxi (Mercedes E class,
about the only non VW's on the roads) to the stiftung auto museum and it was closed as we were there through the week. This means that in April last
year, they still only opened on weekends. We had to leave so missed out as well and we really wanted to see the place. They also supply the birth
certificates that we get and I was hoping to pick mine up when I was there but wasn't to be. Like you said though, I will be back there and I have
been there twice already, just make sure there is a weekend included.

It deffo pays to double check opening times
Reminds me of back in the UK...we went to see Stonehenge (ancient stone circle thing)
It's stood there for thousands of years, but the very day we want to see it, it was closed.

I was lucky enough to get into Stiftung and I can thoroughly recommend it. It's almost worth the trek back to Germany alone. As you say, Autostadt is
OK but the Stiftung is the one you want to see. Prototypes everywhere, Hitlers cabrio, Kommanderwagen, Hebs, coach builts, Fire trucks you name it.

I went to both in 2006.
Brilliant Both Museums, but you really need 3 days to both museums justice.
I have heaps of photos, I probably should put up for all to enjoy.
The down the road museum was the only museum before they opened Autostadt, and it was opend in the 80's, it is changing though as they bring cars
from this museum and rotate them thru the evolution of the automobile museum on your left as you enter Autostadt. I think there is another stash
somewhere else as well that is purely for storage and no viewing as I have spoken to may people and they see cars there i have never seen either. If
you work for Volkswagen you are often sent to the university at Autostadt to learn about the brand, I know of one Aussie that has done this.
Cheers,
David
