FS VIC - Rare German Built 1965 Beetle
Rare Original German Built 1965 1200 Beetle
As far as I know I am the third owner. It is completely original and in outstanding condition. The compliance plate shows made in Germany. The Beetle
gets compliments everywhere it goes. There is minimal surface rust on the original paintwork and the pan and ‘A’ pillars have no rust at all with
the original wax coating still being evident. The odometer shows 95,636 miles travelled.
I have a book of receipts going back 20 years for servicing, parts etc along with the original delivery and service book. The mechanic that services
it reckons it’s the best Beetle in Bendigo. The mechanicals are very good which is backed up with the extensive service history. The car cruises on
the freeway comfortably at 100kph. There are zero issues with this car.
The large rear window is uncommon for this year, the Australian equivalent didn’t have the large window until 1968. There are some unusual
accessories also that didn’t come with Australian delivered cars. The rear cloth seat is virtually flawless, the driver’s side front seatback has
been reupholstered but the passenger seat is original. The two seats themselves are original but have tears in them. The interior and exterior paint
is also uncommon. The exterior paint is Perlweiss L37, which I believe means pearl white, not an Australian colour. The windscreen washer is uncommon
also.
The interior is beautiful condition. The steering wheel is outstanding and I believe the horn bar is different too. All electrics are still 6 volt and
everything still works. The radio is original and still works intermittently. I still have the plastic inlay card for radio frequencies in different
states. The roof liner is in average condition, the floor mats etc are in good condition. All the glass, including the windscreen appears to be
original and embossed in German. The heater controls are different also.
The Beetle really drives beautifully and will make a great daily or as a collector’s car. It really deserves to remain in original condition. A very
similar (almost like its sister) Beetle was sold in Hobart earlier this year and was subject to discussion on the forum.
Looking for ($6,000), now $5,800 ono. Has rego until 16 October though willing to renew for 12 months at the same price. Will be sold with new RWC.

L87 with tan running boards.....my Beetle could be your Beetle's long lost German cousin!
Very nice looking car mate, very tidy indeed.
EDIT; I notice your key goes in on the left hand side near the ash tray (where you normally see it on an OZ bug) and mine is over on the right side,

Just curious how these German made cars got here.
Were they private imports from the UK?
Or did local VW agents import some direct from Germany? If so, why would they do that when local production was already in full swing?

Not exactly sure. I guess if you were a purist you would opt for a German built version. I also heard a story that a number of cars were imported in
the 1960s for use by German diplomats in Canberra as they wouldnt drive the home built versions.

There would be tax savings on diplomats using their own nations cars, rather than having to buy them locally and paying tax on them.
I don't have any evidence on this, just my opinion....
but a Beetle as an import would be so much rarer than say a Mercedes, BMW, you see a fair amount of imported MB's here in Australia, from Japan, UK,
Signapore etc.. etc.. because the price difference of the car over there, is so much less than the are worth here.
Whereas importing a Beetle back then would have been a fair proportion of the cost of a car locally, so that leaves you with.. family emigrating,
wanting to keep their pride and joy etc..etc..diplomats, who else would do it? I can't imagine a dealer going to the cost of shipping when they were
being churned out here in the hundreds every week.
Back to the topic of your car, a rare car that is a great piece of VW history and hopefully finds a good home which appreciates all the little
differences in it.

Thanks, this makes sense. I figured they had to be private imports, rather than a dealer or two bringing them in on the side. I'm interested in the
history of vehicles like this.
Two of my current cars fit into the rare import category. My Mini Traveller started life in London and was "driven" to Aus when it was new via the
overland route via India and Singapore. I wish it could talk to me!! I imported the Corona Coupe a few years ago. Neither car was sold here in Aus,
making the Traveller pretty rare and the Corona incredibly rare. I've possibly got one of the only two in Aus.
I like this Beetle, it's just the timing is all wrong for me right now. I've no space for an extra car undercover and a baby due in a couple of
months. So I lurk here and ask questions, waitingn for the day I can search for a Beetle in earnest.
Good luck with the sale. I hope it does go to someone who appreciates it.
