1200cc oil leak also Lee's secret... lol
Hi guys I have an oil leak in my 1200cc sp engine below the oil pump cover.I have taken of and resealed the cover,its not there,but still weeps out
even when not running.It seems to be coming out of the joint between the casings,The engine is in good condition so i would rather not pull it apart
just to fix a leak.Is it common for these engines to leak from the case joints and is there a way to seal it with out pulling it apart. thanks kym |

there is a type of threaded oil seal it has no seal the .come on boys help me here i'm old and helpless
well there is no rubber seal just a reverse twist thread that stope the oil comming out maybe its getting a bit old

!1check your oil pressure switch if the metal has separated from the plastic.
2greedy is right he is old (oops) but is a reverse thread. Baja's have a sand seal there which you can put in if the prob persists
or is the oil level too high??
3,remember; the fan sucks in air from the back of engine so it could even blow oil out though the shroud along the crankcase towards the oil pump,
if u hve a leak at the oilcooler rubbers under the fanshroud
want any vw bits old but like me, Made in Germany!!!

Hi
Yes its very common for air cooled engines to leak out of the case joints... most still do...
so You have nothing to worry about...
You can spray foaming degreaser on the join and hose off
while its clean, You can then spread silastic over the joint
from one side to the other...
there is no pressure behind the oil... its just leaking thru..
All early VW engines used to leak oil or [mark their spot] lol
but these days silastic or gasket cement can seal the joint..
it won't be the oil slinger on the crankshaft..
these do not wear out... and only leak if there is too much oil in the engine or the crankcase breather is blocked...

Were VW engines made to leak oil???
Hi again,
Back in the 50s/60s there was a rumor that VW made their engines leak oil, so the salt and chemicals used on Icy roads in Europe wouldn't corrode the
magnesium cases...
I don't really believe this...
BUT
an oily engine [engine coated with oil] would not corrode...
I know of people in the UK who use all their old sump oil
coating under their beetle to stop any rust...
a good preventitive .. but Messy... Smelly... and difficult to paint upside down... lol

Hi
with the removeable rear valance.... [fibreglass]
this is the height in which I take the engine out or put it back in..
but I've done it so many times I have worn the wheels on the jack down... lol
I have heard of people driving with the jack still in position... lol
makes a lot of noise.. on concrete...
what happens on tar or gravel...
I hate to think... lol
even worse with a VW jack in position... lol
I will tell You a small secret... with My semi auto beetle, You cannot start the engine when its in gear...
when I first got it on the road...
it happened to Me about 3 - 4 times...
once at a service station after filling up....lol
once at a car show... lol [I was the last to leave..] lol
the engine wouldn't start, so, first I screwed the throttle screw on the carby so it would be idling high..
so I jacked it up with the trusty VW jack... crawled under and shorted out the starter solenoid with a large screwdriver...
the engine always started...
and the car tried to drive away as it was in gear..
with Me still under it...
the worse time was outside My home... as the jack dug into the soft bitumen as the car tried to drive away.... lol

Um..... did you think about that? drive it out wit the CV's attached? or, have nothing to drive out with, with the cv's gone........ I just dont
know how to correct that any further... without being mean...
