Okay as a Beetle noobie, what are the main things you should keep as spares? What should you always keep in the car just in case??

for street use barry is on the money, id add a clutch cable and throttle cable to the spare parts though. unless u had them spare at home and got a tow.

if your engine lid doesnt lock then a spare lead or two doesnt go astray either, the youth of today (shakes fist)

i carry a lot more than that in my baja though

I do carry a spare ignition coil. It once came in handy
sandpaper, a can of touch up spray paint, cut & polish cream
and i don't think anyone mentioned jumper cables. in case you left your light on in a motel car park.
a litre can of engine oil, in case you did a service and didn't close rocker cover properly, come and think of it a pair of rocker cover gasket aswell

i was taught a long time ago that a tool box only needs 3 things.
wd40 for when it should move but doesnt
duct tape for when it does and shouldnt
and matches when the first two dont work.

First thing you need if it is an older Beetle is an emergency flasher light, so, hopefully no one rear ends you if your car is broken down on the road and you can't push it off to safety.

Give the car a full service yourself,
or get it done by a VW mechanic,

spark plugs, leads, rotor cap, points, oil in the engine and air cleaner, fan belt, any hoses that look 50 years old, fuses replaced etc.. etc..tappets adjusted
Doesn't cost that much, and if you are running around with these items that are really throw away pieces then you have to expect at some point it is going to refuse to start.

If you get it all done, you are starting a clean slate, that "should" greatly reduce the chances of a break down,
