I'd like a quieter exhaust

Yes I'm getting old!

I own a '62 bug and need some help with getting a new exhaust. For the last 6 years I've had a tuck away system (bought from Big Boys Toys in the UK where I used to live) but now I'm putting in a sound system for the first time in my green machines life and wanted to quieten things down a bit, I've already applied dynamat and sound deadening material on the inside which has helped but it's the exhaust note that has to change now.

I used to have a bugpack single quiet system on it about 7 years ago and wouldn't mind something like this again.

Any opinions on whats available here in Ozzie?

regards,

Eug.

Hi

I have an average stainless 4 into 1 system that I fitted a muffler to that Westside Mufflers (aka Westi on here) supplied, he may have some more of them, they are twin pass 2 inch muffler.

If its a stock engine, a stock exhaust will quieten it down a bit.

Yes, forgot to mention its a stock 1300.

I'd like something that looks a little bit better than stock, although I see CVD has stainless pea shooters might not be too bad..

Old age finally catches up...lol

Yes, I have fitted some NOS Genie extractors My Son had...
I bought a thunderbird quiet muffler from Mick Motors...

Its now very quiet compared to before.... lol

and i do use heater boxes...

a standard VW muffler with peashooters or flared muffled pipes also quietens the exhaust down a lot...

The thunderbird quiet pack muffler is quite a low quality muffler, I had one on my Baja. It was quiet but got louder with age as the internals rotted out.

Just go to an exhaust shop and ask them to put a nice quiet muffler on it. Anything will do the trick. If money is tight ask them to put a second hand muffler on. Most shops throw out perfectly good mufflers all the time, because they take them off new cars to put a performance exhaust on it.

At Uni (no money) I used to go to exhaust shops and ask if I could dig through their exhaust bins. They always said yes, and I got some good muffler bits out of those bins :) I used to make my exhausts myself from those 2nd hand parts.

Thanks for the advice fellas.

I guess the best option for quietness is always going to be something stock. I initially thought it just doesn't fit in with the style of my resto-cal bug, but now I'm thinking... polished pea shooters for me!

thanks again,

Eug.

i used to do that too
every time i used to rip the guts out of my exhaust boxes i used to raid the local zorst shops bin, as wes said you can usually find perfectly good boxes that last for ages

back on topic though, i have a thunderbird quiet pack and its actually quieter than a stock peashooter exhuast and sounds 100x nicer
its well over 3 years old now and ive had no probs with quality, but im not on the coast and my bug lives in the garage most of the the time

Most mufflers sold at muffler shops [at least locally] were plain rubbish...

thats why they want to sell you a stainless steel one... lol..

Your muffler needs to get hot enough to get rid of the moisture
otherwise they get eaten away... from the inside..

I read an article once that said to weld a grease nipple into the exhaust pipe before the muffler and a squirt of grease now & then will help extend the life of Your Muffler...

My car backfired once, essentially it did a key banger. The points wire fell off the coil, I put my foot down and nothing happened, then the wire touched the coil again - BANG. The thunderbird split down the middle and was much fatter after that. I think I pop riveted it back together for a temporary fix.
