Maybe this Polo engine running on wood Gas?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfSov6jmgKg
Weren't there also wartime type 1 based vehicles getting around with charcoal burners attached? I'm sure I've seen some pics somewhere (
kubelwagens, I think).
Wood gas was in common use during the war and post-war periods, due to extreme fuel rationing.
Regards,
Matt.

Ah, here you go.
The VW T230 wood-gas fuel system!
Here it is on a Kubelwagen.
And here on a KdF Wagen (Type 60 wartime Beetle)
And here is two together
More info here: http://ww2.whidbey.net/jameslux/woodgas.htm

Matt.

Not sure on type of wood but was the purpose to reduce valve train noise or,....... to reduce internal volume of pushrod to increase pressure, thus
getting oil up to the rockers quicker on startup?
Regards,
Matt.

It's amazing how many bets you can win on the 'wood in the engine' thing. Trouble is proving it these days!
