Just bought my first bug
Hi i just bought my first bug a 72 model today so trying to learn lots about it.It has vw1300 badge on the back and was told when i was looking at it
that it had a 1600cc motor. it is a twin port motor but have read that some 1300 motors had twin ports aswell so if anyone can tell me what motor i
have would be really great thanks.Engine No is AS086111

Hi
AS is a 1600 engine number, but you will find that VWs are just Mecarno sets for big kids so it could be anything.
Your bug must have seen some off road action judging by the height and the rear tyres.

its just had the 1300 long block swapped with a 74 1600 one
it still has the 1300 carby etc. pretty common thing
before you run it to much go and get some new fuel hose and replace all of it but particularly the line between the fuel filter and the carb.
thats the wrong spot for a filter and the leading cause of vw fires.
its right in between the coil and distributor so when the hose pops off cos the idiot that installed it put the filter on the pressure side of the
pump and didnt use hose clamps, fuel sprays everywhere im sure you can imagine what happens
bug looks like a good starting point, just starting with the typical pillar rust in the back

Thanks for the info yer that filter scared me with old hoses and no clamps my kombi was just as bad when i bought that i changed the two filters
inside the engine bay to one filter outside the engine bay to before the fuel pump.Should i do any changers to the 1300 carby to match the bigger
1600?

My guess is you have a 30 Pict instead of a 34 Pict
Seeing as you have a 009 dizzy and not a stock vac advance one i would stay with the the 30 Pict
Loos a little top end for a lot smoother drive
Doubt you would notice the difference

Hi the carby says 31 pict 3 on the side and the dizzy is 009.

you really would notice bugger all difference
ive got a 31pict3 on one of my spare 1600s and its barely any different, a little less pickup on hills is all i notice but it does get slightly better
economy
if its not flat spotting when you accelarate from down low id leave well enough alone

She looks pretty straight 
Remember to dose her in a good lathering of lanoline oil in the a pillars from under the bonnet. and spray in the rear as joel stated, if u can get in
the heater channels and sills too (Fish oil or diesel could be used, if u don't mind the smell) Look for death foam in there too, if u see any, get a
hook and pull it out (holds in moisture, 99% the excuse for rear rust in there.)

If your just road driving, change those rear tires.... you wont get great wear on them, and you will cut the noise.

Check for rust under the running board where they meet the fendersw, near the jack points, they are picky bout it if they put it on a hoist.

one nice looking beetle there...
get some wax onto the bodywork and chrome to stop any rust... curnubra wax if you can afford it... Meguiars or mothers etc...
Get some foam degreaser and spray the engine compartment to get all the grease out of there... then hose off...
009 distributor is the only part needing replacing, as they were never used on VW air cooled engines...
check to make sure there isn't any escaping from the fan shroud... like next to the spark plugs...

Hi dirtbag you are correct it is a morris 850 i have just finished a resto on it and got it on the road after being off the road for over 20 years.

Hi jamiec, that's an awesome job you've done on the 850. Is it still an 850 motor? I have a real soft spot for the 850 with their sliding windows
and tin grill etc. Nice work. Love the white roof too, good choice.

Good news on the beetle front i have now sold the morris 850 so now have some cash and room in the shed to work on the bug and i have now started working on it as of today

Hi Jamiec,
Nice straight bug you have there. I'm not too sure how good it would be to drive on the black stuff with those rear tyres though. Possibly a little
noisy. Have to admit I like that Morris you've just sold as well. I've always liked that model and the Morris 1100 as well. I have a couple of
workshop manuals for an 1100 I don't really know why
But, got to say very neat little car trailer set-up as well. Welcome to the world of all things Volkswagen!

Thanks Greg, yep those rear tyres could be interesting am looking at getting a couple more rims to fit standard tyres to and keep the big ones for

I have made some progress on the bug today i bought 4 new shocks and now fitted, new battery and a pair of front headlights that were from a later
model bug and have been fitted with adaptors to use standard h4 globes and these were also fitted today And over the last month have fitted new fuel pump, sparkplug leads, new fuel hose in the engine
bay,And one new flexable brake hose on the front left . Also sorted some more bodywork out.

fistly great car, good find
my 72 had the same rust in the same place. make sure you coat the inside of the tunnel will a rust kill because if will just keep comming back. also
make sure you take the sound deadning pillow out of the tunnel thats what caused the rust (you won't notice any sound difference).
