It is pronounced Ba-ha. Slap anyone up the side of the head who says it differently. And tell them to look up Baja in Mexico to see where they got their name from.

Hiya Ryan,

It's baa-ha.

In Spanish baja means (roughly) under or lower than. So, Baja California is Under California and that makes sense when you look at the map. Of course, the term Baja as it's used with cars comes from the overland races held in Baja California.

Hi Mike,

I have never heard it called Bar Har in Australia...

always Bar Jar or occasionally Badger... [yikes]

No Spanish spoken over here.. lol

and no one has been to BAJA in California...
where the Off Road Races were held....
and don;'t know
it has nothing to do with the height of a car... lol

I suppose they will continue to be called a Bar Jar in the Australian language ...

Deffo pronounced Baa Haa

Same as Fajita isn't pronounced "Faa Gee Taa" (another Mexican word) but "Faa Hee Taa" instead.

What is worse though is when they are told the correct way to say it, they still don't make the effort.

Oh! Is that so Lee? No-ones been to Baja (pronounced Baha).

So I didn't go to Valley Centre in SoCal and stay with Bruce and Winnie Meyers for a few days in 1998, then I didn't go down into Baja California with the Manx Dune Buggy Club, then I didn't spend some time at Mike's Sky Ranch on the way to Margaritaville, where I didn't stay at Pete's Camp on the beach, where I didn't get to drive a Tow'd which didn't have a Corvair engine in it and then I didn't get to visit Lake Hanson on the way home from "Wasting Away in Margaritaville".

Hmmm? I wonder what I was doing at that time?

Maybe I then didn't buy a Manx SR and then ship it home.

Hmmm! I wonder where I did get it from.

It's all a great mystery to me.

I must say, when I was a yoiung bloke and the first DB&HVWs magazine came out, I read about 'baja' bugs and wondered how it was spelt. I had read where the name came freom (the Baja desert where they were first developed), and for quite a few years, I pronounced it either 'Baja' or 'Baajaa' . I later saw a doco on TV about the Baja Pensinular and the Baja desert, and I finally heard it pronounced 'Baahaa'. Ever since then, I have always pronounced it that way.

Hi

And while we're talking about pronunciation. Bathurst is pronounced Bath urst, not Bath hirst like most Mexicans say it, but they cant even say where the F1 race is held in Melbourne properly, the say Elbert Park, not Albert Park and Alvis Presley.

I call my car all sorts of things....

oont baba. "oont" being cause its german, "baba" because thats what the old lady at work calls it.
Shitebox. When it breaks.
Good lookin. when its clean.
tough. when its covered in mud.
A drag car. when i put my little wheels on it and take it to warwick.
my wife has a whole list of other names for it but they are all kinda offensive

Generally i just call it my Baja, pronounced "BA-HA"

Some people who drove them in the 70's call them "choppers" too.

¡Santa María!

Todo este apuro cerca de una poca palabra. En español nosotros no dice el sonido de J como usted hace en inglés. Pronunciamos J como usted el prounce H. Todas nuestras vocales tienen solamente sonidos cortos, así que una A se pronuncia siempre como AAH. Eso significa que BAJA es BAA-HAA pronunciado.
