Thanks :(

Hi
Can You move the gearlever with the engine NOT going?

If You can get it into gear without the engine going
put it in 2nd gear and turn the starter - engine should start
then turn engine OFF...when You get where You wanted to go...

OR place in 1st gear and turn starter motor -best to do this in a few steps so the starter motor won't over heat..

Is the clutch pedal on the floor???

Can You push the clutch pedal down to the floor??

the clutch throw out bearing may have come adrift or wore out and collapsed...

there are lots of possibilities... bottom of gearlever problem??
gearshifter under the back seat oval plate come adrift??

but If You were actually driving and the car stopped driving it IS probably a Major problem....

I wonder if there was any oil in the gearbox???

Its impossible to guess how much.... it will cost...
a new clutch?? take the engine out & put back in..

When you buy a 40 year old car... anything can happen
it depends on what was replaced by previous owners...

Best of luck

Lee

PS: the old John Darling Shell servo Rose...
I notice the john Darling sign is no longer there...
Now its Belmont North... lol

What year model car?
Could be something simple under the nose cone, if the hockey stick has jumped out.
This can be done in the car, if you hold your tongue right,
but much easier when removng the whole thing.
...and is cause by wear, so may happen again sooner than later.

But it sounds like the crunching is telling you it is time to get it done.
Do a search on this and other forums' tech section to get your self familiar with the terminology, and bugets fro reco or second han units.

[size=4]Hi
No,
coat hangers are usually used in closets and as car antennas.
As Said... it would be much easier to attack if it was all out of the car.. but I did read somewhere recently where the engine and gearbox was moved backwards slightly so they could fix the problem....
it looks as though Your 'hockey stick' may have jumped out
or bent??? it wouldn't be broken ??
but I have heard of bent ones...

if you had a spare gearbox to pull the nose cone off and check how it works...
Most Manuals tell You to take your Gearbox/transaxle to a VW dealer to have fixed... as its a specialists job...

but the nose cone part can be repaired by a keen owner..

I'll see what I can find out and PM You...

cheers

LEE

PS: looks like the previous owner had a problem???

Early shift couplers had tie wire through the clamp bolts.

But not wire coat hangers...lol

so does the wire go thru the head of the bolts???

I was thinking of wire like no6 fencing wire... lol

LEE

PS I just remembered that wire coat hangers are getting thinner and thinner...lol

then they paint them blue so they don't rust..Lee

take the box out and take it to Belmont North they will fix it they've fixed ours for around $240. They know there stuff as they have been around for years or you could take it to Penfolds at Georgtown or Ben Dury at Teralba all VW specialist.

Why would it cost hundred to get it towed if you live in newcastle???? We have had cars towed from morisset to Maryland and Maryland to Maitland and it didn't cost hundreds. And even Belmont from Maitland.

1st and 2nd sometimes would crunch a little when driving at hirer speeds even when the clutch was fully pushed in. i just assumed all vws must have been that way but mayby not

i go along with rose,I can get one towed to taree for that sort of money.A tilt tray is much cheaper option than totally destroying the unit and that lets the mechanic check out the problem whether it is internal or linkages..

Won't cost hundreds for 17k Adam, however if you can find a tow vehicle I can get a trailer to take it there, probably a freebie though we would have to make all the arrangements in advance. Give me a call if it suits.

17 kms isn't far at all just put it into 2nd gear and drive it there early one morning or late one night so you don't have to worry about the traffic.

Or a tow truck wont charge much at all probably around $50

You will be happy they will fix it for you no worries.
Let us know what it was that was wrong when you get it back on the road.
