"There is one person on some VW forum running 33x900 15s on 4.5" wide rim" END QUOTE !HUH!!!

http://www.azbaja.com/ForumsPro/viewtopic/p=53300.html

As you probably are all aware with my constant spamming on here ... i am in the market for rims... and am yet to decide.

I see some nice chromies 10 inch by 15's for sale in north qld on ebay..

BUT these guys on this forum, with some rediculously insane offroad vee dubs rekon that its fine to run 235 70 15s on stock rims, 700 x15s on stock rims and is in the title, 33 x 900???

900?!
I dunno bout that but hte others even... can you really run such wide tyres on such skinny stock rims?

They claim cause the vw is light... so it don't make a difference... In the pictures the tyres don't appear to balloon much. (you rekon they would though)

It seems a bit 'out there' so thought i would bring it here and get hte experts opinion

Ah. so it is illegal as well!

i got 195's on my daily driver rim that was (according to factory) made to accomodate 185's.

does that mean i could be in serious crud if i have a brang?

here we go..

I solved my own mystery:

"Tyres

The maximum tyre width for a car or car derivative must
not be more than 1.3 times the vehicle manufacturer’s
widest optional tyre.
However, for an off-road passenger vehicle fitted with
front and rear beam axles, the maximum tyre width
must not be more than 1.5 times the vehicle
manufacturer’s widest optional tyre.
The nominal width of the narrowest tyre fitted to a
vehicle must not be less than 70 per cent of the nominal
width of the largest tyre fitted and never less than the
vehicle manufacturer’s narrowest optional tyre as
indicated on the manufacturer’s tyre placard."

The Australian Design rules:

http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/resources/file/ebde8d0521b67c6/Pdf_modificati...

BUT!!! my car is 1969... isn't that 'pre-adrs' and therefore doesn't have to comply? Just like how i can have bonnet pins... but if it was post 71 then i couldn't???

!!!

Chris ,
With all the other nice work you have put into this car stop mucking around and just buy some brand new performance alloy wheels .
Not only will it finish the car off nice , they are not as expensive as you may think @ only approx $120 to $140 per rim which in the greater picture is not all that much .
Yes i realise you are a student and all but think of it this way of all the running around etc was added up looking for a secondhand set you are probabley not going to save much at all and as said above the new wheels will finish of what will be a nice build .

Just my two cents .

Andrew

Some wide chromies would be nice.
