Thro Out Bearing
Can people post up some pics of what the throw out bearing should look like in a 1964 beetle. I think mine is shot but just need to make sure.
Thanks

the one that sits over the input shaft and springs forward towards the clutch when you put your foot on the clutch pedal?
thtas the one!
its a standard pre 70's...were only 2 types i am aware of (same as pre 70's early kombi, type 3, beetle etc, all same). i unfortunately am stuck
with a brand new early one in my garage as it didn't suit my post 70's kombi box. So had to get the later.
EARLY: (This is what you want)
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC%2D111%2D141%2D165%2DA
Early has the round clips on the side of the bearing, while the late has squarish

Yeah on the input shaft.
Mine seems to have like a semicircle sticking out the sides not a ful circle. Ill post up pics tomoro but how hard is it to change and i think ill
need at least one new spring cause only found half of one in the bottom of the trans.

yea sorry... thats what i meant. its semi circular... but none the less not squarish like the late.
there are only 2 types...
Not hard at all, and new springs are cheap. HD springs are also available for a little extra.

the early original ones were usually thrust bearings..
and were solid..
with a new type thrust/throw out bearing -there are either ball or roller bearings inside it...
so place your hand on the face of it and turn it around...
it should be smooth...
its usual to replace the spigot bearing in the flywheel at the same time...
cheers

Yeah it had busted one of the springs and only had the one on it. I am wondering if it would have done any damage to the clutch and other parts. Also
the input shaft seems to move alot.

The input shafts to have more movement then say a Holden gearbox for eg. Check the clutch fork for for wear, which allowed the bearing to move out of
position. Also I would be thinking there may be some damage to the clutch pressure plate, pending design.

it doesnt look as though you have damaged the pressure plate, you may just need a new release bearing. if you need a new
clutch kit we sell them at highway clutch and brake. kit number is vwk18001n or vwk18002n. our prices are good too.
cheers.
