That's definitely a J&S.

BTW The Wiggles Big Red Car is a modified J&S.

Those two screw holes in the top corners of the front number plate area, tell me that it was at some time, registered.

If you can get approval to re-register it from the rego office, by giving them the old chassis and engine numbers, then I think that you should definitely buy it.

Make sure that you let the rego office know that you are not asking them who owned it in the past. They can't tell you that because of the privacy laws. It might get their backs up and cause them to become unco-operative, so go gently there. Softly, softly, catchee monkey.

Make sure that let the rego office know that you are only asking if it was at any time in the past, registered as a buggy, roadster, convertible, etc., and if it was, will they re-register it as a buggy?

If they say that they will re-register it as a buggy, Get that in writing.

You don't necessarily need to prove it was once registered, it is possible to newly register it as a buggy. I put a J&S through new rego as a buggy 3 yrs ago, it needed an engineering certificate but it got through. It may take a bit of time as far as pit inspection and such but don't think that your only chance is previous rego evidence.

Take photo's to your local registration office / inspection area and ask them directly what they want to get the car registered, thats the best idea...get the word straight from them.

Rules have changed since then mate.
I inquired with the RTA only a couple of weeks ago and they told me if the chassis has been changed ie: shortened then it will have to comply to current ADR's and be done as a ICV.

As far as i know VIC has clamped right up with them down there too. and if the rego has lapsed then you may find it difficult to get past.
If it has had previous rego, then see If you can find someone to register it in NSW. as they will still acknowledge the fact it has held rego in it's currant configuration, just you would have to go get a weigh bridge certificate there for the blue slip. It must state that it's a buggy, Roadster, J&S or anything other then a beetle on the previous rego tho.
