My 57

This is a pic of my grey 57 Oval.
Outside of a 1600 Sp engine, full syncro box, updated interior and a set of Mangels wheels its all original. hmmm??
As you can imagine its keeps with the traffic well, but stopping needs a little planning.
Accesories I have added include Hella semaphore replacers. (flashing lights that fit over the semaphore hole) Empi gear shifter, and a MotorMeter Rally pack

excellent ride

Now I reckon our two 57's would look great along side one another. Mine could do with proper bumpers though. From chassis numbers mine was built in Nov 1956 , my paint is not original colour - what about yours.

Good idea Glen, what about the Nats next year!!! Parked up on a northshore beach somewhere. Great photo opp.

Have'nt checked my chassis numbers for age yet. Assume its the correct one. Will check and let you know.

Engine is definitely not 57. But I just picked up a 58 36 horse, that will go in some time down the track. Like to have a bit of power for now tho.

Not sure what the original colour was as all traces have been stripped away. Can you find out that info from the body numbers?
I like the Grey tho. Very 50s. Sets off the chrome bits well.
I'm a bit of a fan for restored ovals in 50s colours, full chrome, but with better wheels & tyres and bigger motors.:):)

From the chassis no. you can find the Built Date. some of the guys may have the standard colour list for that year.
I really wanted to do the Blue that came out for the Ovals, but could not find the formula at the time of painting. I since found some one named Zoran works at Peps Up this way, who has the paint formula. I'll attach pic of part of someones car with this colour.
I have Very similar taste in cars.... The grey certainly makes them look old.

I had a 55 in that colour about ten years ago. My favorite factory colours are the Gulf Blue and Fontana Grey.
Gulf blue and white / blue two tone wheels is a great cominbation.

I used the Golf inertia reels because I was stripping one at the time.
That colour combination sounds superb...

Could the grey be "Gunyah grey"?

56 Astro , not sure what the Grey colour is. It was on the car when I got it. I just call it mouse grey. Thats what they call it in all the VW mags.

VW Fool, I'm trying to get my hands on a digital camera so I can drop some more pics on the site. Stay tuned.

Cheers

Looks like you'll have to downsize those pics Dean and replace them with small images. Shame I cant see them. Oh well!

I love the blue but think I prefer the grey. I agree with the grey and white though.

I think if I had an old machine like these I'd paint it in a satin black with white piped trims like Two Guns splitty bus. That combination has really sold me on doing a resto sometime in the future.
