Gear stick pin help


Hi peeps,
After driving my 72 notch home I noticed that the amount of play in the gear stick is alot, it just spins. I can select gears but the whole thing rotates. So pulled it out and found that the pin that goes into the slot has disappeared and I am only left with the ball bearing on one side.

Is it possible to fix this or am I better off just getting a new gear stick?

your 72 stock gear shift does NOT havea pin only the ball bearing to give a pos lock into the shift rod socket

If you had an origional type 3 shiter then it would be bent and have a pin to lock it in to position

you dont need to fix any thing as its not broken you could re grease it and adjust the shifter into correct position

As it's 25 years since I owned a 72 SB (the second one), I can't remember that finer detail but I would think that the stick would have to be dead straight for this to be so. Is that correct?? I don't seem to remember being able to rotate the stick when waiting patiently at the many Sydney traffic lights back then. :lol:

One thing for sure is that the earlier chromed bent stick shifter with the rimmed ball housing for the large boot measures 35mm from under the ball to the centre of the pin. The later, and I'm not sure on how late with the rimless houing and small rubber boot and still with a bent black stick measures 43mm from under ball to centre of pin. That's 8mm difference so if you put an early chromed stick in a later housing the ball/pin is only just sitting in the shift rod socket and can come out of mesh. Make sure the two are the correct match.

Thanks for the quick response. yeah it is a straight shift rod so maybe I will just grease it up abit more and hopefully that holds it in position. I do know that the gearbox was changed from an auto to a manual but I am not sure if this makes any difference.
