Glovebox Problems

This is gunna sound stupid but how do i get the nut off a new glovebox latch. Ive tried twisting it so that the catch goes down but it doesnt go far enough down.

You may have to squeeze the catch with a pair of pliers to make it retract enough to slide the nut passed it.
