DIY Immobiliser :)
Just a question do any fuses control ignition?
I was thinking if one of the fuses did then everytime i leave my car i can take out one of the fuses sort of like a DIY immobiliser, cos lately ive
been paranoid about my beetle being left outside by herself
cheers
Costa...

Yes one of the fuses controls the ignition system.
Its usually one on the end of the fuse box depending which model you have and should be a red one.

simple method. Do what I do . If you can't park it where you can see it pull your rotor button out and lock your lid ,easy. How many thieves
carry a vw rotor button in there kit.

my greatest fear is getting stuff stolen from the car rather than the car itself being stolen. Like steering wheel, seats, stereo etc. just got to
work out the best way to keep them safe? |

Securing your innards :)
Hey, i have a decent sound setup in my car, 2 x 6"x9" kennys, 2 x 6" kennys, an Alpine 3 cd stacker, and a boss audio 1000w amp, so
keeping my equipment in my car, and not in a thieves hand is a priority haha. I've Bolted down my speaker tray, making it harder and more time
consuming to remove speakers if they tried, i've also clamped down my deck (works nicely, thieves tried to take it when they broke in, left empty
handed). and i have my amp under the speaker tray. Just add an extra bolt here and there, but not dodgy looking, it worked for me, and im still
pumping the tunes out of the beetle!
P.S. The rear luggage compartment in beetles really gets good bass thru it get 6 x 9's!! :P

immobilising the baby
while taking the rotor button is fun and will work.. its a little impractical.. and stealing fuses is just going to weaken your box, i wired a
external fuse from the box and a switch which i concealed inside the ashtray all the wiring is in the front and covered by the carpet.. so basically
its a killswitch without running it to the engine and its invisible unless you know that your ashtray is the immobiliser.. has saved my baby a few
times.. though it wont save your quarter window when they get in :o/

I have a screecher alarm kit from DSE that I am going to use in My beetle. when mounted inside the car, when it goes off, it is too loud to stay
inside the car.... I have always thought that car alarms should be inside the car to make it uncomfortable as possible to the thieves.
You can always hide a switch etc so the ignition won't work... or even wire it to the parking light switch, so the parkers have to be on to start
the engine....
another thing I have placed in a Beetle was a 6.3mm stereo socket. to start the car, a 6.3mm male plug had to be inserted .. or it could be used in
the opposite way if wired differently...
With a type 3 Variant I owned for many years, I installed a key switch on the car, & if the doors were opened with the switch on... the alarm
sounded.... so I didn't have to lock the car.. just switch on the key switch.
cheers and never give a crook an even chance...
Lee

depending on the year the 'generator' is a 55amp and thats sufficient for that stereo.. just not that stereo 2 full beam lights and 4
spotlights, interior neons and a police siren.. much to my dissapointment :P

Wattages of Alternator & Generator @ 12v
A beetle DC generator only puts out 30 amperes. a nominal output of around 360 watts at 12 volts.
an AC Alternator puts out 50 amperes.
a nominal output of around 600 watts at 12 volts.
As You can see, there is a large difference between the output of the Generator and the output of the Alternator. What would You rather have ??

If you take out the fuse, what stops someone just using the next fuse along??
I was thinking of fitting a kill switch to the +ve coil wire, that way if someone tries to start it or hotwire it, the engine will crank but not
start.....most people will just think there is a problem with the car and move on.....was thinking of using a push on/push off button inside a
cigarette lighter since i dont smoke.....nothing like a kill switch in plain view.....

yeah 11cab i've done that. putting a kill switch onto the coil and hiding it somewhere is really good. It hasn't been tested yet as no
one's broken in to my bug yet but several times i've forgotten to turn it off and sat there with the engine turning over wondering,
"why the F##K won't it start!", untill i realise that i've left it on and manage to just start it with a almost flat
battery... actually I did it today *again* in a shopping center carpark...very embarrasing... |
