To buy or not to buy - caravelle

I'm looking at getting am early 2000s caravelle - turbo diesel manual or auto...for a bigger car and semi-camper (with good air-con in the back!)...

what should I be looking for - any issues with autos? (I've read mixed reviews about them)...where in Brisbane is a good place to get it checked out prior to purchase (RACQ?).

thanks

Early 2000s Caravelles are the last of the T4 body shape (the T5 came in in 2004). They are strong and reliable vehicles, with excellent ride and handling compared with the crude Japanese alternatives. The turbo diesel 5 is a great choice. The VR6 is faster but will use a bit more fuel.

Modern VW autos are very pleasant to drive (and far better than a manual in traffic). They are reliable when the recommended service is followed (ie changing the fluid regularly). Yes the RACQ is the best place to start. Once you buy one, find a good VW specialist that knows modern VWs (air-cooled VW shops may be OK but not all of them like modern VWs).

Yes the T4 four-cylinders were pretty weak (detuned Golf engines) but they stopped supplying them on Caravelles pretty early on (but plenty of white T4 vans have them). Generally you'll only find T4 Caravelles with either 2.5-litre 5-cylinder petrol or 5-cylinder turbo diesel, or 2.8-litre V6 engines. All are good.

Check out http://www.carsguide.com.au/site/buy-a-car/search/  and select Volkswagen, and Caravelle. Good luck!
