65' Bunyip Baja

G'day Gorgeous Guru's

Just sharing the love.

I bought this old 65. It's on its last legs and would me a great rat bug so my plan it to create a rat-look Baja.

It's relatively rust free and has a sold pan. It's stock right through but trashed as you can see from the photos. The drivers seat is bolted in (Big No NO!) and a few dings and dents right around. Character I call it.

Planning on doing the brakes and mechanicals first. Sort the seat and minor corrosion issues. Nothing worse than getting out on the dunes and a wire falls off or a hose cracks. So 1. reliability 2. driveability 3. comfort 4. image.

It's 6volt but I'm not concerned about changing it over straight away. Want to focus on stopping the suspension and drive train.

Looks good Steve, but why Baja. Looks ok to keep as a complete Beetle, maybe the photos dont show all.

Good luck with the makeover and glad to see/hear you are on the mend.

Kev

I thought rebuilding a VW would be cheap - Shit I was wrong, just don't let the wife know !!!!

I've had a couple of Baja's. I live near Stockton beach but probably the main reason is that one day, hopefully in the near future I'd love to have a beach buggy.

The beach buggy / baja community through out NSW & Qld are a great bunch of blokes (and a couple of chicks). Love getting together and sharing a story or two around the campfire.

Baja's are a cheap, but enjoyable way to love VW's and be able to offroad as well. Being a Scout Leader offroading is important to me as well.

Good question.

I like the Volks rods too but not this time.

Im quite envious of what you have at Stockton. Quite a few years ago there used to be quite a big VW Offroad scene down here in Tassie, now it has all but diminished with the occasional street baja all to be seen. Makes you wonder what happened to all these cars, i guess the cheap Jap 4wd killed them.

So as for the baja, are you looking at fitting a baja kit? Or just the rasied front and rear? Keep us all posted hey :tu:

Yeah an actual Baja Kit. I could just jack it and flair the current guards but a good mate of mine has a kit available so I'm stoked.

Started peeling away the years of rust, paint, deadener, underlay, lining and plain old muck today.

As usual it's going to be a bigger project than I though it would be but they always are.

Unbolted the drivers seat - Thst right the tool who had it before me had four bolts holding it in. Not even any washers either. Shesh!

Bog in the bottom of the A's. Heater channels plastered over. I'm starting to think even Baja might be too good for it and I'll have to Rat Rod the sucker. He he.
