im just starting to set mine up
itll be all custom fabbed up though
but theres a few kits availble overseas if you wanna go to the hassle of importing
look up gilmore and ICEAC kits for VWs
you need a decent engine though, its alot of load to put on it when its working its hardest in hot conditions

Did it back in the eightys
This is copy of what I have sent others on what I've done.
I have air conditioning in my '62, it works great and I'm real COOOL!
The underdash unit is an after market (made USA) "Mark IV", small and neat,
two stage fan and temperature control, ducts etc. the rest - i.e. rotary
compressor (Sanden), condenser, receiver/dryer are from a Holden
Commodore (local Australian built car).
The condenser unit with twin electric fans is mounted in the spare tire
well. Air scoops at the bottom and escape holes at the back, sealed over
the top to stop water entering the luggage compartment. The receiver/dryer
is mounted in the void under the fuel tank on the right hand side, access
from behind the right hand fron wheel. Hoses under the floor. The compressor
is mounted to the right of the alternator on a bracket from under the
alternator stand.
Extra pulley welded in front of standard one. Had to have a slight
bubble put into the engine lid to clear the electro-magnetic clutch on
the compressor. Has a sensor fitted to shut down the compressor under
1000rpm (is adjustable, allows for easier starting and idle. Does not
effect the performance that much on my warmed 1600TP.
Disadvantages are - it only recycles the air inside the car (need to
open a window every now and then), and I have lost some space in the
luggage compartment (now taken up by the spare wheel).
Advantages: My wife will now go travelling in the bug!
Here are some pics
1 - The '62

2 - Condenser unit & Fans

3 - Dash unit

4 - cover over the Condenser unit & Fans

5 - Compressor unit

6 - Bulge in Engine cover

The following pic of the compressor bracket:

Hard to get it all in the photo while it's in the car.
The mount is bolted to the bottom alternator housing/engine by
three bolts ( longer than standard, two not in pic) and at the top to the
alternator housing.
Two supports and a slide adjust bracket for the compressor.
This support took many hours of trial and error, but the result was worth it.
I also had to block off the right heater exit on the fan shroud, have put it on the side.
Others tend to put the compressor on the left of the carb, but I think it
interferes with the distributor and carb adjusting.
I had all the bits given to me for free, all I had to get was the hoses and
gas!
If I had to do it again, I think I would use a compressor from a small four cylinder .
This would be adequate I'm sure, and would save on the engine bulge!
Although with the later engine cover it would probably clear it OK!
Email me any queries

found this bracket, looks pretty good, the only problem I can see is that if you had a taller dizzy like a magneto or something similar, the bracket
would need to tilt to the right 45 degrees to clear and be more over the generator or alternator.

It's in my Baja which has a 2inch body lift, so there is 2 inches more leg room than normal anyway. It doesn't cause any issues. It's heaps higher
than those old under dash shelves that people used to have.

New style, multi cylinder (7 cyl I think..) compressors are now available. They are much smaller, use less engine power to turn and are re-buildable
(should you manage to wear them out!). I have seen the guys at Gold Coast Vee Dub fit them to cars that they have converted recently.... work really
well too!

I used part of a kit from Hot Rod Air in my buggy (bought through an importer in Perth). Just the Heater/Evaperator unit that goes under the dash. But
they have a VW kit as well. Not sure how well it would fit on our RHD cars.
