Accelerator stuck on full throttle!!!!! 1969 Kombi

On the weekend I went for a long drive down the freeway in my 1969 Kombi.

My accelerator got stuck and the car lurched forward. I braked, and the car just pushed through the braking.Next I depressed the clutch and the engine just revved right up! I pulled over, stopped the engine and fiddled with the carb a bit, noticed the carb spring fully extended.
It didn't appear the pedal was stuck on the floormat or anything as simple as that.
It could of been a disaster...big time!!!

This kept happening, so I kept pulling over and "fixing" it to get home.

Has anyone else experienced this???

What is the most likely cause and what should I start looking at to fix this?
thx

thx for the replies. I ended up taking get fixed. was a combination of a bent rod under the pedal and coagulated grease (40 year old original?) in the cable tube.

btw the bloke cleaned out the grease and oiled it instead. My car always felt so sluggish, unresponsive. It moves on command now and still have air between pedal and floor.
