To hone or not to hone

Just after some advice.
I've just stripped my 1600tp, added new rings, cleaned up the heads etc and am wondering how I tell if I need to do a cylinder hone.

Is it just expected that when the engines are apart that they should be honed? or

Should it only be done if there are some signs that tell you it needs to be done?

Any help would be grand.

Hey man,
You absolutely should hone the cylinders before installing new rings...this is so the rings bed in properly. How much honing will depend how glazed they are etc.
It's important to check the piston ring end gap as well.
You can do it yourself or if you go to a shop take the pistons and rings with you so they can be properly measured to be sure the cylinders are still useable.
How do they look? Can you still see the criss cross hone marks on the bores?
All the best with it. T

Hi

I always hone the bores/cylinders so the rings will bed in..
crosshatch pattern...

Can You see the hone marks on Your cylinders??
I would still do them even if You can see the old hone marks

seeing You are replacing the rings I would think the old hone marks would be gone??

As You are using NEW rings You don't need to take them anywhere as they are made to fit..
You probably knew that anyway... lol

Whatch out if you have a lip at the top of the pot, it can break new rings.
