Beetle Year

Hey All

I realise this topic keeps coming up again and again, but i'm trying to date my beetle.

I'm told its a 69 and from what I can tell it looks about right.
I've searched through the site and found a couple of topics to help me make sure of its age
the chassis number is 118475197
and production plate? 4142089

So from what I can tell its from Germany built late 1968 and therefore the 1969 model?
Can someone tell me if this is right?

Hiya Dad,

That third nuimber in the VIN (the 8) is saying that your car is a 1968 production year car. In other words, it's not a 69 it's a 68.

VW ran their production year from August 1 to July 31. Your car was produced after July 31, 1967 and before August 1, 1968. Any VW produced after July 31, 1968 would be a 1969.

By the way, a little math indicates that your car was likely produced about mid-month in December of 1967.

Your car might not have been a full import from Germany. VW in Australia started importing German made fully built Beetles which went on sale in March 1968 then started assembling Completely Knocked Down kits in August.

Full imports of beetles ended in September 1968 when CKD volume was sufficient. The semi auto Beetles remained fully imported.

So, unless it's a semi auto, if it was manufactured in December 1967 it would have been an Aussie built car.

There's always the possibility it was privately imported.

Regards,

Matt.
