How impotent is spelling?

Apart from often changing the whole meaning of a word, incorrect spelling can make reading hard work.
The bright side is - you get the odd laugh!

Cheers,

Greg

The spelling and use of punctuation on car forums is slightly worse the the fashion sense at your average swap meet IMO.

eg " I went there to see there things if I could do so while there at home."

Or it's a bit silly when you can't spell four letter words or use an apostophe in any shape or form.

Spell check isn't rocket surgery is it?

It's not spelling that irks me, but incorrect grammar like "I done that" and "nothink". Urgh.

EXCELLENT ...

My thoughts too....

but many people have gone thru life not being able to spell..
and now it shows.... lol

I read on a US VW forum a post by a very illiterate fellow..
how He managed to turn the computer on I don't know..
but every word was spelt incorrectly...
and He had terrible problems trying to write what He was thinking..

LEE

PS: I do use the US spelling like thru, meter, fiber, and color as I'm on US Forums a lot... Lee

Guys, I understand about the spelling and how frustrating it can be for what most of us see as simple words. One of the miss spelled words that pisses me off, it the word 'off' when people only use one F. Makes all the difference.

With that said, I can overlook the spelling but the lack of punctuation gets right up my nose. You are reading through a sentence and it doesn't make any sense, then you realise(with an S) that they left out the full stop :grind:

Now do we all feel better now after offloading out troubles :?:

Hi

I hate when people put a long rant into one sentence without a comma, full stop etc, its really hard work to read.

I'm a dumbarse that only just got through year 10, but I try as best as can, but I use Opera as my browser which has a really good spell-checker in it.

I never thought that after leaving school that I would need to use grammar or spelling again or Algebra for that matter, then the net came along and I just had to go and get a computer and get involved.

Hiya Lee,

Hah! It might interest you to know that "thru" is not a technically acceptable American spelling. It should properly be "through". But there is an interesting story behind it.

It seems as though the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper tried to reform US spelling habits around the turn of the twentieth century. Readers back then were not all that well educated and the editors at the Sun-Times figured that if we make the words spell like they are sounded we can gain readership. So they set out to change the way many words were spelled in their paper. Night became "nite", through became "thru", and so on. The Sun-Times eventually gave up these spellings but we Americans are still living with the fallout of this experiment.

And I have to say that, on our own, as an entire country, we have done more than our share to mangle English. As was said by Professor Henry Higgins of Americans, "Why they don't even speak it (English) anymore!"

I always fix mine up if I notice I've done anything wrong because I'm OCD. I'd prefer it if people dont use SMS language when they have a full qwerty keyboard but as far as I know, this is just the internet, not a phd thesis and it doesnt matter at all.

If my wife told me I was an impotent member of the family, I'd probably not like that much though.

The use of grammar and syntactic elements aids communication in this "online" context -- adding credibility to one's post.

Language -- particularly the english language -- has been, and continues to be in flux.

Not all of us are writers.

Not all of us have english as a first language and a generation of those that do were done a dis-service via a curricula which didn't teach grammar.

Most are still able get their point across.

We're all into Vee Dubs. :)

Too true, it is just he internet, but some pride in one's spelling is important IMO.

I suppose it's similar to people who take great delight in driving rat look cars and those who drive them without realising it.

I think that we should learn by all this writing and reading we do, like we learn a bit about our cars from sharing experiences with other dubbers.
