The last original Beetle

This was posted on the 356 Registry discussion. Not sure where they got it from. Anyone know if its true :cry

This time Volkswagen means it: No more original Beetles.

The last factory still making them, in Puebla, Mexico, will stop next month.
The Beetle factory in Brazil quit producing the original, air-cooled,
rear-engine Beetle in 1996, and the original plant in Wolfsburg, Germany,
stopped in 1978.

The Beetle flourished in Mexico long after it became obsolete elsewhere
because import laws restricted competition. But with the coming of freer
trade, Mexicans can buy larger, more powerful, more comfortable cars for not
much more money. The Puebla factory will continue to produce the new Beetle.

But a chapter in automotive history is closing. The original Beetle, in its
simplicity, ruggedness and lack of creature comforts, was closer to the
Model T than the new Beetle.

Well, I guess all our air-cooled Beetles are now going to appreciate in value! :D

I wonder how this is going to affect the supply of new components, like engine cases. . . :(

Aren't car manufacturers obliged to produce spare parts for 20 years after discontinuing a model?

i personally cant see this happening as they would be like holdens and fords here, thats is cheap local cars which perhaps support the local economy. and they are used extensively as taxis arent they?

anyway if they do stop producing them it will be a bloody shame as i planned on buying and importing a new one sometime in the future

A car manufacturer only has to supply parts for 10 years after last one here.
Trim parts that have no bearing on the drivability of the vehicle may be made obsolete after 1 year.
