Why
In the past month we have had about 6 people ring our business wanting to know if we are selling any of our beetles or know of any,as they want one
for their kids first car
I tell them none of ours are for sale and why would you want to buy your kids a vintage car as its nearly 2010 so why do you want a nearly 50 year old
car for your kid?? when there are lots of good cars out there to buy.

Maybe colonel mustard can shed some light on the subject as he is a young bloke and he has a old bug, that he seems to be spending ship load of money
on
I wonder will it be his daily drive.??

why? question is why not.... iv had new cars from day one, and iv got to say the older i get, the older are the cars i buy.... with older cars you
learn to treat them with respect and also learn the bare mechanical essentials so that u can tinker on them yourself.... i think they are much more
fun and have character.... iv had cars upwards of 60000 at an age of just 20 but love and appreciate my bug and vn ss more then any of my new cars iv
had.... paid for all my new cars myself aswell, so its not an appreciation issue, i just think that old cars were built the way they should have been
and if you have an issue with them its a great experience knowing that they are on the road because of ur efforts......

I have to say, Alot of people on AVD think there is no light in my shed. Take that how you will.
To be honest, I don't believe that young people (Learners and P platers) should be driving vintage type cars, or... unsafe cars. In my opinion they
are a great car for more advanced/or long time/skilled drivers (not blowing my whistle, but I had alot of experiance whilst working as an apprentice).
They are not really an every day car, even though they can be if you have enough cash/time/knowledge to pour into the car. This is one reason why I
think AVD is so great, the advice needed, can be found here, as there is alot of experiance in the members - who are willing to share.
Is it ideal to have a beetle as a daily? Depends. For me, daily is to and from work, to friends houses, church, youthgroup, meetings etc. Max 30km's
a day. My car (in its current state) can handle that. With the money it needs spent on it, it could do 200km's a day, if I could afford the petrol.
In my opinion (which not everybody will agree with) Car's like, mazda 2/3's, Golf's, rolla's are great daily cars.
In the end, its about the style you like, and all that....
does that shed any light?
I spend money on my car, cause I know what I like, and what I want it to look and perform like.

I use my beetle as a daily, to and from school/work, to sports and just around town, it goes to the beach and to cambeltown, bout an hour at 90ks.
I dont have alot of money but im lucky that i have a brother who lends me money and parents who help me out too. I barely knew anything about engines
or anything mechanical before i got my bug and became a member on here.
I respect my car alot more than my mates do to their own, but i also like to test the limits of my car, eg dirt roads and slippery corners but i dont
just do it to thrash my car but to enjoy driving it, and i have learnt alot about getting inot and out of skids by driving my bug in both the wet and
dry and dirt roads.
If im driving it hard ill make sure i check the oil all the time like three times daily.
I do this because my car is the only one like it round town and it gets looks and i love driving it, i cant blame others for wanting one either

But a Beetle is a "good car" though...hence why we're all driving them 30 / 40 / 50 years after they were manufactured.
What more can you ask of a car??
Unless useless things like sat nav / leccy windows are thought to make a car "good"!?
Just more to go wrong in my opinion...

i am in the process of rebuilding a 1971 super bug for my daughter .who is yet to get her liceness. she has been in a beetle as a passenger and loved
it and asked for one as her first car .i feel she will be safe in this car and is a good as a first car for her .and hope she has many years enjoyment
of owning a beetle

Hmmm, think you missed a few things like ABS, crumple rates, airbags etc etc etc

this is how I look at it
When I was young sure me and my friends had veedubs, HR Holden's, Toyota's, Datsuns 1200, Toranas for our FIRST CARS. But these cars where between 8
and 15 years old , quite new cars for the time.
So I would imagine the same thing for the present time we live in 2009 that a 1990 something car would be about the sort of car for the first timers.

My first VW was my mum's car. She just decided she didn't want to drive it after we put a body kit and extractors and hot dog on it. At the time it
was 11-12 years old and airbags etc were only just being thought of. Asmuch as I love bugs, I don't think I would be recommending one for a kids
first car in this day and age.

the days of vws being cheap reliable transport are long gone
back packers buying a cheap kombi to travel in...HA!
you can buy an econovan thats half the age and 100x nicer to drive for 1/4 the price of what a kombis fetching now
and bugs... the newest it still 33 years old
most of us drive them as a hobby car not cos there cheap transport
you can get something 10-15 years old with all the mod cons and alot better handleing/economy/safety for the same price as a road going but ordinrary
condition bug and they will be alot cheaper to insure/maintain/repair
you reallly gotta be a hardcore enthusist to use one as an only car/daily

take an aircooled vw to most mainstream mechanics now and they will laugh and tell you to go away
most apprentice mechanics now dont even have the first clue on how to deal with carbys

this is also true. I know more about mazda fuel injection than i do about vw carbys.... sad.
