What year model ?
Would anyone know what year model vw beetle I would have, first three numbers stamped are 197. (I think, hard to read).
The person who sold it thought it was a 68’, but on sourcing through VW info (that I have and on the internet), I am thinking it may be a 67’.
I did get some old paper work with the car that say 118. (who knows, might not be for this car?)
Some maintenance paperwork that came with the car say 68, and others 67?
Other features that may help identify the year model:
- Bumpers are twin style, with over-riders, and have the extra support bracket in place.
- Has 1300 deluxe on the engine lid.
- No side filler through the side panel for the fuel tank.
- Has the quarter push style window in the front doors.
- engine no. starts with F103
I am new to the VW side of things, and looking to confirm my VW beetle year model, and why it would read 197, instead of say 117
Thanks for any help........

Hi
the 197 means its a 1967 model made in Australia [9]
117 means made in Germany... 1967 model
this means it was made between 1st august 1966 and the 31st July 1967
that is the VW Year... for 1967 models..
the chassis number will be under the rear seat in the centre near the oval plate.. not sure whether You have it or from old papers..??
I haven't looked up the engine number as yet.
not a lot of deluxe 1300s still have the strengthening bars for the over riders on the bumpers...
some cars have the round holes...
others have no holes and no bars...
the 1967 model was the last of the "made in Australia" cars..
it was basically a 1962 beetle with a 1300 engine..
in Germany, they started the big change over in 1965-66-67
and the later upgraded 1500 beetle...
in 1968 [VW year model]
cheers
LEE
