how to fix fuel pump pipe?


Hello people.:blush:
Um the other day when we took the engine out of my 1970 beetle,we noticed that the pipe on the side of the fuel pump,(in which the fuel line slides over) popped out of the fuel pump.i think it is the inlet but im tired and its late :crazy:

I was wondering as to what glue or technique we should be using to ensure that it stays back in the pump and that it does not leak.As it would be a major fire hazard. I will try to post pictures when i get time.

If it was my car, I'd be using the technique called "buy a new fuel pump".

The fitting popping out like that is a pretty common thing, and a new fuel pump won't cost much.... definitely a much safer option than trying to fix an old one.

Also since it's a related topic - fuel filters inside the engine bay are a bad idea, and always carry a fire extinguisher.

LOL oh really i like that technique seems really affective.lol .Yeah i dont have a fuel filter in the back and i carry a fire extinguisher.

buy a new pump.

you would need to carry a fairly big fire extingisher to put out an engine fire...

im not aware of any "glue" that would withstand the effects of petrol, short or long term.

would you rather spend $100-200 (a crazy maximum) on a new pump + fuel lines and clamps, or $1000 for new paint and many other things that would burn like this...

Depends how desperate you are to put it out i reckon...and how soon you catch it.
I put out an engine fire in my 69 kombi with a t shirt once...not that i'd recommend it of course!

There's a plastic block that sits between the fuel pump and the crank case, and the push rod runs from the fuel pump down through the plastic block into the case.

The plastic block's can become brittle and crack, break etc.

With the pushrod there's a couple of different lengths, and you really want one that suits your new pump.

Yeah ok,i know what the block is,but im not quite sure what im to do about the pushrod.Do i need to get a new one,or does the new fuel pump have to fit the size of my pushrod.
also i have a 1500 beetle.standard everything.which one of these would best suit do you think.?

I have read on here a few times that removing the fuel filter is the way to go...Why is this?

fuel filters in the engine compartment,can be one of the causes for engine fires.The others being, leaking carby or old fuel pump pipe like what i am experiencing. In line fuel filters are better off in the front compartment in my opinion.

Where'd you get that list from - you definitely don't want the last one - fuel filter for a Crafter !!!

If you've still got a generator, any of the ones that say "generator" or "w/out alternator" would do the trick. Pretty sure it's the alternator ones that used a different push rod... maybe some one else can say for definite...

Also suspect that the second last one "1600 with generator" is the later pressed metal style... if it is then it'd get my vote.

If the list is from a Volksy place just give 'em a call and explain. Better yet if they're local go in and take your old pump and pushrod with you... then you're guaranteed to get the right one !!!

i pulled my fuel pump out today,the pushrod is in really good condition it is 108mm and the intermediate flange is good too.But there was no top or lower gasket
just a bead of sealant around the edges.Lucky im getting a new pump.

it really depends what you want.i personally have not heard much about electrical fuel pumps,empi fuel pumps seem fine to me, sealed units.
i have one coming in the mail at the moment.
