Whats It Worth?
Looking for a likely sale price on a few items that my scout group has laying around, already have had a few prices thrown around, and I think I know
the worth of most of the items, but id like to get some input from the wider VW community.
We have:
1) Oval Rear Window glass from a 1961 Beetle.
2) Reduction Hubs from a Split Window Kombi.
3) 4Spd Gearbox from a Kombi (bay window, unsure of year).
4) Engine – 1500 with a 1760 Big Bore Kit, Twin Webber carby, Modified cam.
So, what do people think these are worth? |

Worth getting a shell as well and assembling into an awesome baja!
Well, I'm not an expert, but I will make the first attempt:
Oval window glass: I have no idea, has got to be worth a carton though, surely? To be honest I believe that the actual glass is flat and therefore
extremely easy to get a new replacement cut, there's really no benefit to having original glass. Everyone feel free to correct me on this.
Reduction hubs: not sure but they must be fairly rare. Useful to Kombi restorers and Baja builders alike.
Bay window Kombi box: Depends hugely on condition, ranging from about $50 or so for a rebuildable box to around $250-$300 for a perfect one? Don't
know but it's a start.
Engine: Worth quite a lot! Assuming it's all in good condition, I would suggest that the engine, less carbs, is probably worth nearly $1000, and the
twin Webers with manifold, linkage and air cleaners should be worth a solid $500 or perhaps more.
Please take all this advice with about the amount of trust that you would place on wisdom from an unknown drunk in the pub! Good luck, sounds like a
massive fundraiser for the Scout group, but I would encourage them to put it together into a buggy or baja. The Rovers are now running Sandblast
again, and it's a great group activity.

Not meaning to go against waveman, but you say oval window from 61 model. The shape of a 61 rear window may be oval, but the traditional oval window
as you call it finished in 57 (I believe).
The reduction hubs, not meaning to be rude but most Kombi guys throw them away for a straight axle. This does not mean at all that someone wont want
it, I'm sure you could sell it.
Gearbox price depends condition as waveman pointed out, but then depends if its from a 1600, 1800 or a 2L.
Engine, I'm not sure but post some pictures up here and others may be able to help.
These are only my thoughts and others may be able to help with photos.

well according to the VIN, the body is a 61 model. the back window is a curved oval window. either i have a wrongly stamped body, or the 61 had the
tradional oval window.
i know the reduction hubs are hard to find in tassie at least, because when we broke one it took me several months to find some, and that bloke didnt
even know what reduction hubs were, he just let me take away his gearbox. they sure make turning 33" tyres easier tho |

Camo is correct that 1957 was the last year of production for "Oval-window" Beetles, which were then replaced by the small "square" window. It's
possible that someone has cut out an oval rear window section and welded it into your body though.
And, just so there's no confusion, my guess of $1000 for the engine assumed a decent set of twin-port heads, Bosch 009 or similar and a full exhaust,
preferably headers. If it's only got single-port heads then the value is knocked down considerably, but given that you say it has twin Webers then I
assumed that the heads must be twin port.

well he says carby not carbs so its probably an old twin throat DCN/DCNF if its a single

I agree with camo about the reduction hubs, most are thrown away as a lot of busses these days have been converted to either straigt axle or irs. When
someone wants some they are usually given away. Maybe in years to come these will be worth a lot more as numbers decrease and people want to convert
back to the original spec but at present not worth much.
