Latest VW Hybrid - it's a sports coupe
This is the new Volkswagen Compact Coupe show car that has just been shown at the Detroit Auto Show.
It has a high-tech 1.4-litre TSI 'twin charger' VW petrol engine that develops 112 kW (150 hp) and 240 Nm torque, linked to a 7-speed DSG gearbox.
It also has a 20 kW electric motor and lithium-ion batteries, with a regenerative braking energy recovery system. It can work as a true switching
hybrid, or the electric motor can operate in tandem to provide an overtaking power boost.
It does 0-100 km/h in 8.6 sec and tops out at 227 km/h, yet consumes just 4.2 L/100 km combined cycle and emits just 98 g/km CO2.
And those are 19" 'Lugano' wheels.
Rather nicer than a Toyota Prius!

It's based on the Golf. No plans for production yet...

Hi
I cant see the point in Hybrids, the batteries are heavy to carry around, are highly risky to emergency staff if a crash occurs, must make masses of
pollution when being made.
Do you know what happens when a Hybrid runs out of petrol, after the battery goes flat it stops and then requires specialist chargers to get the
battery working again.
Better off with one of the many fuel efficient cars around these days.

VW's head of design, Walter DeSilva, used to work for Audi so no surprise about the family resemblance. Very similar taillights - it might be the way
the updated Jetta's rear will look next year too. Heaps better than a Bimmer...
I agree with Steve about hybrids - Volkswagen does not make a hybrid production car and has not jumped on the Prius bandwagon. They have experimented
with hybrid Golfs and Touaregs but that's about it. I suspect that they made this beautiful coupe a hybrid just to get the attention of the
puritanical Americans - it was displayed at Detroit. If it does make production, you can bet it will have a TSI twin charger petrol engine only, or a
TDI turbo diesel only, with no hybrid drive.
This one is just for show. VW prefers to go with high-efficiency diesels in 'green' production cars - the BlueMotion TDI Polo, for example, is the
most economical and lowest CO2 4-seat car in the world.

This is the 2011 Jetta just add 2 more doors and hey presto !!!
That will change Phil VW is jumping on the Hybrid show this year. (and as you know they have done in the past at home in the Fatherland at
experimental for govt. etc)
The Hybrid-1.4 TSI unit is tipped to make production in the Jetta and New Midsize Sedan (American built Camry fighter).
First global production hybrid due off the ranks is the Touareg Hybrid due late this year.
