TP heads on SP blocks
Hi All
I have a 67 1300 Beetle, looking to bring my motor out to 1600/1650 and run TP heads since they are so cheap.
The engine was reco'd not long ago.
Other than using a TP inlet manifold can you see any what else I need and can there be any inherent problems with this setup?
Can the early tinware handle the heat of a TP1600?

It's quite possible, but there are a few things to be aware of.
To fit 1600 (85.5mm) cylinders in a 1300 case (77mm cylinders), you will need to strip your recently reco'd engine down to the last nut and bolt, and
have the case halves machined out so the bigger cylinders will fit.
The 1300 case is very good, but its internal oil passages are not as big as the 1600 case. It has a smaller oil pump. The 1300 case only has a single
oil pressure release valve, not dual valves like the 1600 case.
Externally, the major difference is the oil cooler. 1300 engines have a steel upright cooler inside the fan shroud. VW 1600 engines had larger
aluminium coolers that were offset to the front - the so-called 'dog-house' cooler, which had a different fan shroud. Lucklily, if you can find a
complete wrecked 1600 engine, all of this can be transferred to your 1300-based engine. VW thought of this and the gasket kit contains the
'crossover' oil seals you'll need. Otherwise you can still use the 1300 cooler and shroud, but your cooling won't be as good as a VW 1600 motor.
The 1600 engine also had a slightly bigger fan.
Apart from the 1600 TP manifold, you'll probably need a 1600 carb as the 30-PICT on the 1300 would be a little small for a 1600 (which came with a
34-PICT Solex). You'll also need 1600 top cylinder tinware as they are shaped differently to fit around the twin port manifold at the head.
The VW 1300 and 1600 were very different motors, not just bigger cylinders and different heads!

Thanks for the replies,
Well that just about rules that out
Will keep looking for a 1600 tp complete to use as the base.
Now will prob go 1915 anyway and keep my existing motor for something else |

Would a early 70s 1300 tp be a better base to build a big bore motor, is the 1300 tp the same block as a 1600 tp?

Yes it is the same, but some small ancilliary differences.
Like any used case, inspect it thoroughly.
1600 P&C's go straight in. Heads off a 1300 TP require machine work to fit 1600 P&C's.
I'm doing the same as you plan. 1300TP as a base. My case will need a thrust cut as well as a line bore. The 1300's can handle a flogging, which
they usually get.
Mine (AB code) uses 10mm studs. Others will have 8mm studs + case savers.
This has been covered before. The last post I can remember was Joel posting about a few 1300 TP cases he has.
