Which clutch for vw tranny to ej20?
Hi All
I tried searching but couldnt find any info. I dont know too much about clutches but Ill try my best to explain.
Can someone please tell me what should I be ordering for the clutch? Subaru wrx clutch with kombi centre?
I tried counting teeth and measuring the input shaft but it didnt fit too well so wondering what you guys use.
Its a swing axle type early gearbox.
Also, may I ask if all the vw input shaft are the same? (kombi, irs etc) It would make finding one to use as a clutch alignment tool much easier.
Thanks in advance
Cheers
Damo

can we get abit more info?
what adapter are you using?
if its one of the aus made ones they just use vw clutches
just depends whether its the 200mm beetle one or 215mm kombi
its only the bellhousing adapter kits like smallcar and RJES that use subi clutches
all vw input shafts have the same splines, just type4 are longer
if its a turbo engine your gonna need a pretty HD clutch

kombi box, custom bellhousing & input shaft (RJES), 240mm subie clutch
failing that... cranky kit for the starter & HD bug clutch & enjoy slipping/worn out clutches, be semi gentle & keep a spare box handy

Sure can. It has a custom ali plate which is very thick. The situation was that in
After the latest engine rebuild, the old clutch (which was shagged anyway) was misplaced so I measured what I thought was correct and it just didnt
seem to work whilst the engine was running. I pulled it apart and it just gripped the input shaft too snug. It would engage with the engine off ok.
But not on start up. Bugger.
Hence why I am hoping that there is an off the shelf clutch I can set and forget. I have rung a few places but its not a new beetle or commodore so I
am at a loss. A friend of mine raves about this forum so....
I re machined the flywheel and it has a hydraulic slave setup fyi.
Thanks for the answers on the input shaft dims too!

if only I had a correct clutch for every time I heard that!!!
Same gearbox since 96 and its on its third engine. Its a track car and only uses 3rd and 4th. There is no 1st gear and 2nd is only good for the pits
at idle. It could probably use some new seals but is still going strong with 10x15" slicks after all these years.

Depends if it survives Bathurst at Easter with the FOSC. At the moment...its going nowhere in a hurry.
Ill dig up some pics and if I see any of you guys there, Ill say hello. I only really have met Rudi and seen his bug fly past.
oh, it used to have a racing bottom end with the works but it was undrivable. Now it uses a stock sti bottom end, custom heads and inlet with a small
turbo and is dry sumped. I prefer reliability over speed. It has enough of that. The main problem is the nut behind the steering wheel sadly :/

Ok. I got the clutch from John Sherman after I had to call the police on the post office (long story. Wish it wasnt)
I put it in and things are not working so good. I have adjusted the throw out bearing back and forward and I still cant get it to change gears with
the engine going. I put the pedal in and in gear the engine turns over and the car doesnt move but it wont quite start.
Does anyone know anybody who knows vw gearboxes to subies that is in Sydney? I am getting rather desperate.
What pics do you want of the dry sump setup? It is belt driven.
Cheers
Damo

It was working before. Only difference is the clutch and pressure plate. The rest is as it was.
I keep trying to "fix" it and keep making it worse!
Ill try v force. Cheers

Sounds like your clutch isnt disengaging.
You need about 20mm free play at the pedal before you feel pressure.
Check your bouden tube has the correct arc in it.
Also with heavy clutches if u dont run hard bushes or at least new bushes in the cross shaft, the throw out bearing wont depress the pressure plate
enough to disengage the clutch and change gears while running.
Maybe also the cross shaft is worn/flexing.
Also check the clutch cable hook on the pedal in the tunnel, could be weak, or flexing and the actual tube the cable runs in could be flexing and
needs a support halfway down the tunnel and check welds at both ends.
