Under 1600cc Classes

I do realise that alot of VW's are racing in the 1601 - 2000cc classes, because we can make bigger and better engines for around the same cost as a 1600 that is at a similar spec but can a VW actually be competitive in the smaller cc class?

It's just I was reading through the entries into the Vw supersprint and it is all 1601- 2000cc classed cars, and to be honest there isn't many under 1600cc race VW's getting around out there, got me wondering why?

food for thought anyway, Cheers

Shaun

because they're not competitive against other 1600 cars.

There are some very quick datsuns running in under 1600cc class at hillclimb events.

I doubt a beetle would keep up.

Hillclimb I can understand that a 1600 wouldn't be the best go, but for speed events like a supersprint or tarmac rallying wound't a 1600 thats well put together be a ripper? The salzburg porsches used 1600's in the 70's and did alright.

i realise it's not the 70's now but surely a hot 1600 still has something going for it in competition

I built a hot 1300 for Targa which won it's class first time out. :)

Problem is to get the heads to breath we need to run a bigger bore and therefore smaller stroke, she revved like a trooper.

I looked at comparative times when building mine and the time difference (yes in hill climb) was only minor between the two classes so you really had to make the 1600cc scream to be able to keep up. Maybe in the future I will have a go.

I remember driving that targa car once. It just reved and reved....

Did you ever find out how much power it was putting out?

ANy sub 1600cc class, you will need to really rev it to get the power you want.

Anybody know what the datsun and excort 1600's make?

Unfortunately no, I never even had the chance to finish the tune/setup.

Went good considering.

Hi

When I used to Supersprint in the 80s the Datsun 1600 and Geminis were always a very quick even in stock form. I usually only beat them on the dirt at Amaroo

It when you get into the higher capacity classes, the VW shines a bit better, mainly because of better braking and traction due to the rear engine layout.

Look at Rudis car, under 2 litre turbo sees of R35 Skylines at Oran Park, in the footage from the top of the pits he had just overtaken the R35 before he had a small off. http://www.youtube.com/user/davejcarter#p/u/4/fvcoV53Stns

I guess that's why the Beetles often do well in the larger capacity classes in hill climbs as well.

just did a few quick calcs you COULD build a very over square 1600 with a 94mm bore and a destroked crank with not to much work except for conrods, they could do with a shorter length. there is enough meat to take a crank down to 58mm without to much welding takes it to 1610cc approx, would be good someone better step up and give it a go. Light rods plus big valve area and a healthy amount of duration would make for some big revs.

The combo I put together for the '98 Targa 1300cc class was 56.5 x 85.5 bore (stock 1600) gave a capacity of 1297.5cc, some short little Nissan rod and 40 x 35.5 valves.
