[FS - NSW] 1972 Porsche 914. Red, Fuchs and regrettable..
I remember when I was about 20 years old. I was walking along an inner city street and walked past this car that I'd never seen before. I took note
of the Porsche badging and Karmann built body. It had 16' Fuchs, a convertible top, was mid engined and had racing numbers on the doors. I instantly
thought that this was one cool car. Why wouldn't I? That car had always been in the back of my mind and was well up on the list of cars that I
dreamed to own one day. 15ish years later, it became reality.....
Unfortunately though, I must move on and let this car go to (hopefully) someone else that will take good care of her.
I purchased it from the President of the 914 Registry in Melbourne (Ursula Weidenmuller) a couple of years ago who looked after it very well. She
rarely drove it and I've only put a couple of thousand on it since I've had it. She always had their Porsche Specialist friend (who I can't
remember at present) service it along with their other Porsches. It was proffesionally converted to RHD many years ago as 914's were never released
in RHD from the factory. I drove it back to Sydney after buying it and it ran beautifully the whole way.
It's a 1972 model with the original 1.7 ltr Type 4 engine w/5 speed. It has recently had twin rebuilt 44mm Webers and a new exhaust/muffler bolted
on to it by Boris over at Vintage Veedub for more go. It's surprisingly nimble and goes extremelly well.
The roof is in excellent condition and is very easy for one person to remove/install in about 30 seconds. The interior is also in excellent original
condition.
It's always garaged and had a quality respray about 10 years ago and still looks great.
Replaced front suspension and brakes with 82 911 units. Brand new shock inserts front and rear. Brand new rear disks and carriers (for 911 stud
pattern) bought from renowned 914 brake specialist PMB Performance in the States.
Has 16x6 (plus spare) Original Porsche Fuchs with very good Michelin tyres.
Replaced removable top seals, window scrapers, quarter window rubbers and many others. I have
the rear window seal kit also but not fitted as yet. These were all bought from Auto Atlanta in the
states.
Comes with complete original circa 72 Porsche tool pouch that is in excellent condition.
The car is original (except for the upgrades) and unmolestered. Will easily serve as an every day car just as well as a weekend cruiser.
Everything works as it should.
Drove it down the coast and back on the weekend and it loved Mount Ousley. The sound of a Type 4 mid engined convertible under full 44mm Webered
throttle is heaven!
Why would you buy a Karmann Ghia when you could own a red, convertible classic Porsche that's very unique and therefore cool!
Check out what the guys are doing in the States with these things! These cars are very easily modifiable as they come out of the factory with the 911
2.0 and many parts are directly interchangable with earlyish 911's. Parts and spares are easily bought from the States.
USA got a lot of 914's and they are rising in price there. Almost the same price as a late 90's Boxster. A sure sign that these are true a true
classic..

So is it a type 4 motor and not the 914 motor ? Or do you mean its has the type 4 style motor (and its the 914).
Any front and engine photo's ?

craig what he is saying is that its the 914/4 with the same base case as the kombi type 4 not the 914/6 which is the porsche flat 6.
it is a different motor to the kombi as the tolerances are tighter and the heads are different.
damn i wish i had more room as well.

What he is saying is that its a 1700 type 4 motor
What I'm after is a 914 with its original 914 motor with the 3 bolt manifolds and tilted spark plugs.......not a replacement 1700 T4 motor put in.
Barls do you know the car, is it the 914 motor ?

Hi Guys,
My appologies, Craig. Barls is right. I didn't exactly say it correctly in the post. The motor IS the original "EA" numbered 1.7ltr 914 motor. I
thinlk that I was trying to spell out what the car had to people that didn't know much about these cars. You said that you're after one with the 3
bolt manifold. They only came out on the 2 ltrs as far as I'm aware.
Rego is due early June.
The car will come with all the original factory fuel injection bits that came off it when the Webers went on.
Ill't take a pic of the engine tomorrow.

Hi Guys,
The engine on this car is original. It used to hunt up and down at idle and had a flat spot at around 4000rpm. The webers should have cured those
problems. The gearbox was rebuilt ($$$$) by John Gregory in 2000 from memory and the car has had little use since then.
Some minor rust removed and a partial respray done around the same time.
Fabulous to drive. Buy it.
Remember. If you don’t keep playing with it, it won’t work when you want it to.

that could be done but ths seems to work and look fine. Would you please send me a pic of the setup you mean?

Have a look at the linkage 'rods' and you will notice they are on different angles, the closest one in the photo being on a steep angle back to the
carb. They both need to be at the same angle so the ratio/ark is equal allowing both carbs to open at the same rate.

I see what you're saying in regards to the angle of the rods.
I may be being stubborn here but I'm not entirely convinced that the carbs would be totally out of sync by running the set-up this way.
I've taken measurements at both WOT and at idle position and both sides are identical.
Perhaps it's the motion between these two points that could be different... There's nothing missing on the linkage setup and I know I've seen a
stack identical to this.
I do know they were installed and tuned by a well known VW pro and that the car runs and drives fine but I also know that you know a thing or two so
what do I do??

Bump - Carbs adjusted as Craig suggested. He was right. It drives even better now with synced carbs!
