0.82 Kombi 4th gear wanted

g'day guys,
I need a Kombi 0.82 4th gear from a 5 ribbed box, the one with the step in the gear from a 002 kombi box.
Not quite sure if I have explained that right. I have attached pics of my 0.82 that I destroyed on the way home from Warick last year.
Hope someone can help
regards
Jak

Hi Jack,
just so you are aware...
that broken cog you have is either a 0.883 ratio
or could be a 0.931 if from an L-bug.

So called 5-rib box, or 1800 box, came only with a 0.889 course tooth gear,
which is what you are after I assume.(?).

There are no fine tooth 0.82 (0.816)cogs except from foreign 091 bus that do not fit in you box.
(our 091 bus boxes all have 0.883)

There WAS a 0.821 ratio 4th gear in 002 style from late 1600 and 1700 trans.

To find one such equipped trans, look for the later style "1600" boxes, ("3-rib"),
that have NO bolt in the lower part of the intermediate housing.
(earlier ones had a bolt there to locate the front pinion bearing).

The will most likely have ears on the top of the bell housing too.

Thank u so much for the reply Dave, now I am in a massive world of confusion.
Just to give u some background, I had 2 gearboxes built in 2005, I had 2 single side plate boxes, which I was informed had the 4.12 R&P which I thought (but please correct me) made them from a type 3?
So when I met my gearbox guy, the solution he came up with was to use Kombi course teeth 3rd gears to help stop me stripping the fine tooth third gears. he also said that he could use the course tooth 4th which i thought were .082 ratio. I do know that when both boxes were built that one had a fine tooth 4th(which probably explains the above pics) The box that I have in my car now is my second of the 2 that I had built in 2005. The ratios seem identical to the first box, I get 2750rpm for 100kph.

To define what ratio a gear is, can I just count teeth? is there a chart that I can refer to? I have been for a few years now getting my gear ratio info from here
http://sandlizrd.baja.com/gears.htm
The gears that are in my boxes did come from 3 ribbed Kombi boxes, I know that much, but this time when I went to get another 3 ribbed box the gears didn't match to what I need, not the ratios, but the style. So the above broken box has been rebuilt using the 0.88 course tooth from a 5 ribbed box.
thanks jak

Hi Jack,
yes you CAN just count the teeth,
and divide one by the other.

0.889 coarse tooth is 24/27,
and is very close to the ratio of the later type 3 which use a 0.883 ratio, but fine tooth(53/60).
Yes the type 3s all had 4.125 diff ratio.

All 3 rib kombi boxes had 0.821 fourth ratio which has a tooth count of 23/28.
The later ones had the 002 style gears(as mentioned above...no bolt in the lower part of the interm hsg).

Just for reference, the L-Bug 4th has a 0.931 ratio, 54/58 tooth count, but used the 3.875 diff ratio to compensate.

2750 rpm at 100km/h sounds like a taller ratio than 4.125 with 0.883 or 0.889.
This DOES depend on tyre height of course,(and tach error/accuracy),
but does seem to match either 4.125 with 0.821 or 3.875 with 0.883 or 0.889.

Thanks so much for your help & info on this Dave, it's most appreciatted & it's nice knowledge to know.
My tyres are 205/50 R17 which equates to just over 25 inches. I have a digital tach which is part of the Microtech dash display, I can only assume it's correct. I have also checked the speed on the freeway against my wifes Jetta & it seems spot on.

Now I have just counted the teeth on the broken 4th gear & its 63/51 which makes it 0.82? @ it's fine tooth as well.

jak

AH there you go, another type of gear to put on the list.
That is good to know.
I will have to go and check my pile of gears and see what I have in fine tooth.
Pretty sure only 0.883 and 0.931 in fine,
and no coarse tooth 0.82 to spare.

I think I will just get my gearbox guy to take the 0.88 out of the rebuilt box & replace it with the 0.82 fine tooth that he has there. The 0.82 course tooth that I have in my car right now I have found to be a little bit noisier on the freeway, whereas the fine tooth was very quiet, so I can see now why vw changed it.
Besides the first box with the above broken 4th gear lasted 65'000ks & it was only the drags at Warwick that hurt it.
Thanks for all your help Dave.

Ian , all the ratios are standard superbug but the 4th is 0.82, with a 4.12 R&P which feels really tall.

I got an 1800box that started jumping out of 2nd that I was keeping for spares. Probably going to put a subie box in the buggy now, so if you want the 4th gear out of it its all yours.

Remember that the 1800 has the higher reving 0.889 fourth gear.

I had a look through all my gears Jak,
and had no fine tooth 0.82s at all.

I DO have some coarse tooth 0.82s, but all burnt and leaned-over, from trying to transfer 460hp.

Those fine tooth 0.82's must be specific to
the latest model type 3 trans,(usually single side cover),
that have the 002 style gears.

Out of interest,
that combination of 4.125 ad 0.8226 fourth is less revs than L-bug.

The coarse tooth gears should not be noisy at all.
Most likely wear on them makes them noisy.

Despite popular reasoning,
VW actually went fine tooth gears,
to speed up production times.

Looking at your broken gear
it is clear that the thrust faces are very burnt.
This is usually caused by the 3rd/4th hub thrusting forward,
under high power, and eliminating clearance.

You can have your trans builder use thicker 091 circlips
and machine the hub to allow for the extra thickness,
thus keeping the hub in place.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n216/dangerous_05/IMG_2033.jpg

Put some oil grooves in the face of the new gear,
and use a metal caged needle bearing
from an early 40hp trans.

Oil grooves are needed because
the only new german mainshaft bearings available
are for 091,
and the grooved thrust washer will no longer be used.
(You can get China 002 bearings though I dont use them.)

Thats 65'000ks JVL. Lets just say the Box cost me alot less than $800 with the Kombi gears & new bearings & syncros. Thats why I had 2 built at the same time. These are all vw boxes transmitting 221ft of torque at the wheels daily.

he also built CT's gearbox with Albins 1st 2nd & third, just before the Dutton Rally & we flogged it for 3 days straight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aI8_QhvwDNg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ALNlllL6uw  & Ct has been flogging it all over the country ever since! When i drove it last it still felt like new.

So I'm not complaining about my gearbox guy at all. In fact I'm stoked. But he doesn't like building them that much.

The albin box Cts got is goin to be worth the money more than ur standard L box....wat iam sayin is if ur pullin boxes out around 65,000ks all the time u would of better doin a albins box...etc
Are u putting 221ft torq flogging it daily?
So is the box in ur car now makin noises?

Theres nothing wrong with the box in my car now, it's brand new, I just feel that the course tooth 4th is a little whiny on the freeway around 140kph+ , thats all , otherwise it's fine. Perfect actually.

Besides, it was only the drag racing that hurt the box, & I made a promise to my little car that I will never make him go drag racing again.

I could have a box full of Albins gears but I chose no mortgage instead.
